Alpha Bet

The letters drawn in last week's Alpha Bet were CLIV and there were no winners of the 2,800 jackpot which now rolls over to 2,900. The 5 lucky dippers each winning 20 were Peter McGuirk Kinturk, McCabes Altertate, Fr. Larry Duffy Clones, Anna McPhillips Roslea and Aideen Howlin Cootehill. Well done to them! The October monthly sellers' prize went to Vincent Lynch....there's no substitute for class!

Ladies Club

Noeleen's Team are Building up a Head of Steam!
What a fabulous turnout for week one in the Ladies Winter League with over 50 cards being returned! Already there is a strong lead by Team 2 with team captain Lady Vice Captain Noeleen McCague setting the standard and cracking the whip! Well done to Rosita McCabe 15 points, Veronica McGorman 16 points and Noeleen herself also with 16 points total 47 points a great start. Noeleen has already boldly stated that they will maintain their lead throughout!  Just 2 points behind with 45 points are Team 3 and again team captain Doli Maguire has set the bar with 16 points along with Lady Captain Elaine Hamilton 15 points and Teresa Hanawin 14 points well done ladies! We have two teams in joint 3rd place on 43 points Team 4 team captain Mary Trant 16 points, Geraldine Igoe 15 points and Madam Secretary Bridie Keenan 12 points. Team 6 also on 43 points with team captain Kathleen "my putters hot" Leonard in buoyant mood following her famous victory in Concra Wood last week encouraged her team to bring in some good scores. Vera Tighe 17 points, Anne McCarthy 14 points and Kathleen herself 12 points. In 5th spot are Team 1 on 39 points and once again the  team captain featured, well done to Ann Keating (c) 14 points, Celeste McKiernan 10 points and Marion Foy 15 points. Bringing up the rear is Team 5 currently is last position BUT a huge congratulations has to go to Una McCarra for the only score returned for the team. Where is everybody? Come on Team 5 you have a lot of work to do to catch up! It was feared that the weather may have beaten many of us in week 2 with plenty of rain and high winds to contend with but once again over 50 cards have been returned and with some good scores reported it'll be interesting to see how the teams have done after week 2! Can't wait!
Barry McGuigan Trophy
Irene Rooney and Eileen Maguire eventually managed to get the final of the Barry McGuigan Matchplay Trophy played as the weather thwarted their efforts on Friday. Eileen made a strong start winning the first 2 holes and throwing in a birdie at the second for good measure. Irene knew she would have to knuckle down if she was going to make any headway. However Irene managed to get the match back to all square despite a further birdie from Eileen and it was nip and tuck all the way with the match in the balance on the 18th tee. Both ladies played up well BUT an unexplained disaster be struck Eileen and she put her 3rd shot into the river! Irene capitalised on Eileen's bad fortune and claimed the victory on the 18th. Well done Irene and commiserations to Eileen.

25th October 2010

Matthews Open Weekend

This competition took place over Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th of October. It turned out to be one of those days we all dream about for long standing club member Frankie Dolan who had a fantastic score of 62 nett. Frankie went around the front nine in an incredible score of 37 gross and must surley have had thoughts of breaking course records but got it a little tougher on the back nine when he came back to more normal standards for 18 handicappers. Being Competition Secetary for a number of years and having checked so many winners and losers cards he must have sucummed to a little back nine nerves having had such an incredible front nine. In 2nd place was another golfer who hasn't figured a lot in the winners' enclosure recently was Hugo Clerkin who had a score of 64 nett which probably would win on 9 out of 10 days. Best gross on the day was Fergal Reilly with a score of 74. Pat Ryan was winner of the 2's competition. Well done to all.

Open Wednesdays

Winner of Open Wednesday on 6th October was Evan Gibbons with a great score of 39 points. In 2nd place was Ned Barry with 37 points. Good to see Ned hitting it better after having a poor run of form over the summer.
Winner of 13th October Open Wednesday was Gerry Smith with 38 points. In 2nd place with 37 points was Evan Gibbons. Evan must surley be our most consistant golfers this year as barely a week passes without him figuring on some prize list.

Scratch Cup.

Well done to Fergal Reilly winner of this year's scratch competition defeating Packie McCarville in the final. It's great to see our lowest handicapper in the club getting his hands on this trophy. Well done Fergal.

Hilton Cup

Congratulations to Pat King winner of this year's Hilton Cup matchplay competition who defeated Paddy Kerr in the final. Pat had some tough matches along the way but with nerves of steel managed to dispatch opponents one after the other until he had seen everybody off. Pat himself is probably his biggest critic but he must surely be delighted to have won this important competition. Well done also to Paddy on making it to the final.

Alpha Bet

The letters drawn in last week's Alpha Bet were MNVA and there were no winners of the 2,700 jackpot which now rolls over to 2,800. Vincent Lynch was close with MPVA for Maureen, Pauline, Vincent and Alan (bet he wished he's called his daughter Noreen!) Close but no cigar! The 5 lucky dippers each winning 20 were Paula Jenkins Clonfad, Aoife & Aaron Aghabog, Ciaran Maguire C/O P. Connolly, Adrian McAviney Newbliss and Eoghan Murphy C/O P. Connolly. Well done to them.

Ladies Club

The Ladies Alliance had a massive turn out for the Concra Wood trip last Monday week with 73 ladies competing in the stableford competition, 10 of which came from Clones. Our very own Kathleen Leonard, who has just had 3 months absent from the fairways due to commitments in the USA, returned in fighting form and claimed 1st prize with a fabulous 35 points holding off one of the Concra ladies into 2nd spot. Well done Kathleen who is chuffed to bits with her beautiful Newbridge necklace and delighted to have beat such a strong field of competitors. Our Vice Captain Noeleen McCague also featured winning the back 9 with a fabulous 21 points.

Sparkling Silverware

Have you noticed that all the trophies in the clubhouse are now gleaming and sparkly? Thanks to Doli Maguire and Noirin McKenna who spent a lot of time and plenty of elbow grease bringing them back to their former glory.

Ladies Winter League

The Ladies Winter League is now into it's second week but at the time of going to print no scores are yet available for week one. However everyone is thrilled that over 50 cards were returned for week one, well done ladies and keep it going!

Bread for Books

The bookcase in the ladies locker room has seen plenty of activity last week with many books being donated and borrowed. If you wish to make a donation please put your books on the shelf or your money in an envelope into the cash locker marked "book money"

Matthews Open Weekend

We know that you'll all be glued to the telly this weekend watching the Ryder Cup so Matthews OPEN weekend has been moved to make sure no one misses out on either the gripping TV viewing or this prestigious competition weekend generously sponsored by Eugene and Mary McCaughey of Matthews of Clones and Monaghan. Come along and play on Friday 8th October, Saturday 9th October and Sunday 10th October in the annual OPEN ladies and gents single stableford repeater with wonderful prizes on offer. Timesheet in operation 047 56017

Mary GOY again!

Mary Trant (16) secured her 7th Golfer of the Year title in 8 years following an exciting 18 hole stroke play off last Sunday against Ann Keating(16). The ladies were greeted with beautiful spring like conditions for their round and the course was in magnificent shape. Mary & Ann matched each other's drives on the first, both just off the fairway to the right of the pillars however Mary found the better lie in the rough and managed to edge one shot ahead on the first. Mary's tee shot was pin high right at the second and Ann's shot fell short into the bunker and sadly her exit from the bunker resulted in a further 4 shot deficit and despite some flashes of brilliance reminiscent of her Lady Captain's day performance she was never able to get ahead of Mary after that. Congratulations to Mary for her 5th win in a row and commiserations to Ann who boldly stated at the beginning of the year that she was determined to take the GOY off Mary this year. I'm sure Ann will give it her best shot in 2011!

Ladies Stableford

Last week's stableford competition reverted to a sweep with two sections being contested. Section A (0-23) was convincingly claimed by Lady Captain Elaine Hamilton with a respectable 34 points. Section B (24-36) was claimed by Doli Maguire with 26 points and once again Doli carded 19 points on the back 9! If only she could sort out her front 9. Well done ladies.

What's on this week?

This week's stableford competition concludes on Thursday 30th September, let's see if we can end the season with 3 sections being contested! Come on ladies don't moth ball the clubs just yet we have Matthews Weekend coming up and the ever popular Winter League will commence mid October so get your names down if you wish to be on a team.

Matchplay up-dates

Congratulations to Eileen Maguire who beat Vera Tighe in the final round of the Rose Bowl on the 20th hole! We await the result of the Junior Cup final to be contested between Martha O'Grady and Helen Connolly. Good luck to both ladies. The semi finals of the Barry McGuigan Matchplay Trophy for all handicaps is between the two Maguires Eileen and Doli and on the other side the two Irenes, Rooney and McConkey so we know there will be a Maguire and an Irene in the final!

Alpha Bet

The letters drawn in last week's Alpha Bet were EDJB and there were no winners of the 2,300 jackpot which roles over to 2,400. Thanks to all the team members for their great efforts.

39 is a Magic Number!
At last the course gave up some great scores last week with the linksy conditions after the baking sun over the last few weeks there was some run on the ball and the ladies took full advantage when competing in the 02 Trophy. There were a number of ladies on the magic number including Helen Connolly and Maureen Lynch but it was Marion Foy’s massive 24 points on the back 9 that secured the 02 Trophy for her also claiming Section C. Irene Rooney(19) also returned 39 points and is delighted to be back to her 18 handicap claiming Section A. Well done Irene! Eileen Maguire stood on the 18th tee with 37 points and only had to get a bogey to do some damage! Sadly the damage was done by putting 2 balls into the OOB River! Never mind it was still enough to win section B. I wonder if these on form ladies will make a move on Lady Captain’s Day?? The draw for the Lady Captain’s Day takes place on Monday 5th July so you only have a couple of days left to get your name down!

May Weekend Results

The single stableford repeater held over the May Bank Holiday weekend was a great success and the Ladies club would like to thank everyone who took part. A special thank you to the competition sponsors Cootehill Credit Union, Whelan Footwear (Martin & Lynn Whelan) Supervalu Cootehill (John Foy) and Mary O’Toole & Co. The scores were fantastic and congratulations to Pascal Carbin winning the men’s prize with 43 points. In 2nd place a man who hasn’t had a win for many a year George Hamilton with 39 points and in 3rd place Martin Clegg with 38 points. The ladies winner with 38 points was Geraldine Igoe and indeed at one stage it looked as though Geraldine was going to be collecting 2 prizes then right at the last minute Lynn Whelan, one of the last ladies on the course on the last day of the competition posted a score of 36 points to claim second place. Our own Lady Captain Elaine Hamilton, not to be outdone by hubby George, also came up trumps and posted a score of 34 points to claim 3rd spot. So not only were the prizes sponsored by Cootehill, most of them are heading back there too!

Jimmy Bruen Competition

Our Jimmy Bruen team travelled to Mannan Castle last week and were very unlucky to miss out on qualification by just 3 shots. Peter McCague and Evan Gibbons played very well on the day and had one of the best scores closely followed by Niall Murphy (Redhills) and Greg Calvert our other two pairings had a hard day. Thanks to all the boys for playing and trying their best.

Open Wednesdays.

Winners of last week’s open Wednesday were 1st Paddy Mc Keown  with a score of 42  and in second Frank Crowe with a score of 39 and in 3rd Pat Ryan with a score of 38. Well done to all Three.

Ulster

Four Ball.

Mickey Connolly’s team travelled to Bundoran last Saturday for the away leg of our first match. Conditions on the day were ideal for links golf and all our team found it a little strange with the amount of run on the ball in comparison to our own parkland course. The team managed to acquit themselves well and even though only managed to secure 1 point out of 5 and only 9 holes down in total which is not a lot from an away leg and much bigger deficits have been turned around at home, so it is still all very much to play for this Saturday at 12 noon when Bundoran visit us for the return leg.

Monthly Medal.

The second of this year’s Monthly medal competitions takes place this Saturday and Sunday so come out and play and support your club if at all possible.

Course Conditions

With growth finally beginning to take place our course is really starting to look fantastic and the condition of our greens are as good as they have been for quite awhile. Well done to Hugh John and Finbarr for the great work they are doing.

Team 3-Vera is Victorious

The ladies Spring League has now concluded and was very well supported, keeping the ladies on the course through the winter months. 8th March 2010

Harte Peat Winter League.

Week 4 and 5 were combined due to adverse weather conditions which closed the course for a number of days. Overall winner for the two weeks was Killian Brady with a fantastic score of 38 points. The highest score of the league so far. There is only a week or so left and a lot of teams on a similar score so make sure and come out and play this weekend and next week and help out your team get through to the playoff.

Texas Holdem.

A great night’s fun was had on Saturday night by everyone who took part in the Texas Holdem. A lot of expert players took part with high expectations but things don’t always go as planned and a few made the walk to the bar a lot earlier than they had expected. By contrast a few beginners held their nerve and made it to the final table of seven. Probably the most delighted of these was Ann Marie Hickey who was also one of the few women to play. Ann Marie wasn’t too disappointed in not winning once husband Kevin had walked to the bar earlier in the night. You may have to monitor that home P.C. Kevin, and yes Ann Marie you were not the first to leave the last table. Winner on the night was Bernard Mulligan who showed nerves of steel to win out over Denis Parker in second and Stephen Trant in third. Well done Bernard. If only the Golf went as well on Sunday Morning’s.

Kitchen Reopening.

Our club kitchen is reopening this weekend and is now going to be run by Jennifer Fitzpatrick. Jennifer comes with a lot of experience having trained in Killybegs and then working in a number of local Hotels and also running her own event catering Company.

Still in 4th spot are Team 1 on 244 and their weekly 58 points came from Eileen Kerr 19, Lynn Whelan 19 and Helen Connolly 20 (notably no contribution from their Team Captain!) and finally Team 4 remain 5th with 219 and the weekly score of 53 came from Team Captain Joy Cassidy 19, Mary O’Toole 18 and Maureen Lynch 16. Well done ladies! Well done Bridie!

The league is now in its last week and concludes on Saturday 13th March, best of luck ladies!

22nd February 2010

Harte Peat Winter League.

A lot of players took advantage of the chance to play twice during the week in week two of the winter league and some great scores were returned but one shone out above the rest, none other than our past Captain prize winner Benny Igoe with a top class score of 37 points. All the more remarkable when he was able to do it on thirteen holes having had a ding on the last. That 20 handicap won’t last long Benny if you bring that sort of form into the summer. So remember try and play twice a week as it will help your team and the Club.

Texas Holdem.

Remember to keep Saturday night 6th March free for Texas Holdem in the Club house.

Captains Drive In

A very good crowd attended our Captain Olly Walsh and Lady Captain Elaine Hamilton’s drive in on Sunday. It was great to see them both hit very good drives in front of the big audience they obviously cope very well under scrutiny. Olly true to form kept his speech to the minimum and didn’t waste a minute, allowing Lady Captain Elaine her chance to have her say. Very best wishes to them both for the year ahead from everyone in the club. Many thanks to the ladies Committee for the lovely food they provided for the drive in.

Alpha Bet

The letters drawn in last week’s Alpha Bet were AMPQ and there were no winners of the 4,700 jackpot which now rolls over to next week at 4,800. The 5 lucky dippers each winning 20 were Gerard Tierney C/O Skule Inn, Jim McCauley Belturbet, Mary Hicks Lisnaskea, Paddy Maguire C/O Frank’s bar and Michael Coyle Newbliss. Well done to them.

Fixtures Fixed!

This year’s fixture card is now available on line at WWW.Clonesgolfclub.com along with all the news about our club.

Ladies Spring League

Week 3 results for the ladies were somewhat curtailed by the bad weekend weather preventing our weekend ladies from putting in a card however there were some fabulous scores returned during the week and the one everyone is talking about is that of past Lady Captain Teresa Fitzpatrick with an astounding 23 points! The pressure is off this year so she can concentrate on her golf! Well done! Teresa’s score of 23 along with Noreen McKenna’s 19 and Lady Captain Elaine 17 ensured that Team 3 maintain their lead and are now a massive 22 points ahead of team 2 who have climbed one place into 2nd despite only 2 cards being returned, along with Team 5 also in 2nd spot, both on 147 points. Team 2 scores came from Ann Keating 20 and Martha O’Grady 18. Team 5 had scores returned from Brid Finlay 16, Doli Maguire 15 and Noeleen McCague 16. Moving off the bottom of the league into 4th place are Team 1 who put together 50 points this week totaling 136. Well done to Eileen Kerr 17, Veronica McGorman 17 and Helen Connolly 16. Team 4 have slipped into last place with only 2 cards returned from the team now on 116 well done to Joy Cassidy 15 and Una McCarra 14. Ladies there are 3 weeks left and weather permitting it will be an exciting finish to the League.

A few big Birthdays!

Congratulations to Mickey Dowds on his 50th birthday on St. Stephen’s Day and also birthday greetings to Catherine Farrell who also celebrated a significant birthday.

Alpha Bet

The letters drawn in the draw for the week ending 21st December 2009 were COME and there were no winners of the 4,000 jackpot. The 5 lucky dippers each winning 50 (as it’s Christmas) were Lynda Goggins Connons, Sarah Cassidy Corconnolly, Seamus Treanor Smithboro, David Wrafter Enniscorthy and Colm Kierans Aghabog. Well done to them! The jackpot is now 4,100 and the draw is every Monday night at the Golf Club.

Wedges

The last day of the Wedges Eclectic on Wednesday 16th December was hugely exciting with the tension getting to most players and the only man to rise to the occasion was Mickey Connolly who improved his score by five points. However this was not sufficient to overhaul the leaders and Joe Smith won the competition with 44 points, one ahead of long time leader, Charlie Browne. Other prize winners were Terry Lennon, Seamus McKiernan and Ivor Lendrum all on 42 points. The Wedges will recommence again sometime in the New Year.

Harte Peat Winter League 2010

The Harte Peat sponsored winter league will commence very soon and as it is a new format, please read the team sheets in the locker room. Study carefully!
