Ladies Winter League

The final results for the Ladies Winter League are emphatic winners Team 7 with 436 points over the 9 weeks! Congratulations to Irene Rooney (captain) Nuala Browne, Kathleen Leonard, lucky charm Josie Curran and the teams’ secret weapon Geraldine Igoe who scored every single week totalling 160! The final week scores for Team 7 came from Irene Rooney 17, Nuala Browne 17 and Geraldine Igoe (of course!) 18. Team 2 made a massive push on the last day with Gemma McMahon playing 3 times and Lady Captain Elaine Hamilton twice to secure 2nd place and knock Team 1 aside. They succeeded by 1 point with 411 points! The weekly scores came from Joy Cassidy 17, LC Elaine Hamilton 20 (wow!) and Maureen Lynch 16. Well done ladies! This team dragged themselves from 6th place to 2nd! In third place were the demoted Team 1 with 410 and the weekly scores came from Mary Trant 16, Irene McConkey 21 (whoop whoop!) and Helen Connolly 14. Team 4 finished 4th with 396 weekly scores from Catherine Farrell 12, Noeleen McCague 15 and Noreen McKenna 18. Team 3 were 5th with 371 weekly scores from Vera Tighe 17, Eileen Kerr 13 and Celeste McKiernan 13. Team 6 finished 6th with 360 with weekly scores from Una O’Reilly 17 Anne McCarthy 20 (v.good!) and Mary O’Toole 15. In 7th place was Team 5 with 326 points sadly no one played in the final week! Finally in 8th place was Team 2 with 270 and final scores were returned by Lyn Whelan 17 and Martha O’Grady 16. Well done to everyone who took part a great fundraiser and the putting fines raised a good sum for Breast Cancer Research. The Marie Keating Foundation lapel pins were won by Veronica McGorman and Irene Rooney. The presentation party took place last Tuesday and there was much excitement as the beautiful display of prizes was distributed amongst the ladies. Well done to Anne McCarthy for organising another successful league, to Maureen for keeping the cash right, Brid and her shoppers for getting the prizes and Michael Connolly for looking after us so well in the bar department, very important! Now as you may be getting withdrawal symptoms by the end of January Anne has organised another league with an added twist! List in locker room if you wish to participate.
This will be the last report before the New Year so Merry Christmas to all our readers and a Happy New Year! Hope Santa brings that new club you had your eye on! And Finally President Liam Quigley wishes everyone a peaceful and happy festive season.

Week 8 Results

Ladies, as we are now in the last week of this exciting competition with the last card to be submitted on Saturday 12th of December, I thought it prudent to let you now the latest state of play! It’s fair to say that no one will catch Team 7 who returned the highest weekly score of the competition last week with 55 points taking their total to 384 some 25 points ahead or anyonw else, well done to Nuala Brown with a fabulous 20 points, Kathleen Leonard 16 and Geraldine Igoe 19. Team 1 are still in 2nd place BUT they are under severe pressure from the threat of Team 8 who are only 1 point further back! It’s all to play for in the final week! Team 1- 359 Mary Trant 27, Irene McConkey 12 and Helen Connolly a magnificent 20. Team 8 on 358-Joy Cassidy 17, Lady Captain Elaine Hamilton 17 and Maureen Lynch 19 (great scores ladies). Ollie Walsh New Captain

The Men’s Club AGM was held last Sunday in the clubhouse, Captain Leslie McConkey in his address thanked all committee members of men’s club and joint club for their help and support over the past year. Ladies Club

Well the weather certainly beat the ladies plans for their presentation evening and supper on Thursday last with most of the roads flooded it was thought prudent to postpone the event until Friday however with the waters not receding by Friday evening it was moved again to Sunday at 3 pm just before the AGM. The event lacked the party atmosphere which the ladies had so meticulously planned for with a fabulous buffet and Karaoke sing a long for afterwards. Everyone knew that the serious business of the AGM had to come before the party mood could take over. The presentation started with Mary Trant accepting her 7th Golfer of the Year in 6 years and Mary treated us to a rather scathing satirical poem called “I know what you are thinking”

I Know What You Are Thinking!

Oh not again that Mary Trant is getting to be a right pain
can’t she break a leg or arm or at least suffer some back strain
Give someone else a chance to win the golfer of the year
she’s hogged it far too long you know, 6 times in 7 years!

She’s won the silver medal, rose bowl and birdie tree
As she gets up to collect her prizes I’ll shout out “it should have been me”!
Maybe she’ll get arthritis or suffer failing sight
or maybe we should make her play her golf in the black of night.

When she started playing golf with a handicap of 45
we thought that when it was cut her golf would take a dive
Oh no not her, still winning prizes it gets right on my wick
out playing every chance she gets she’s never too tired or sick

maybe that’s the answer the more you play the better
come rain or shine or snow or frost she really is a go getter
if I play golf more than once a week maybe I will advance
and get to win a prize or two it might just give me a chance

Joan Connolly was a prospect to knock her off her perch
but she moved up to Dublin and left us in the lurch
we’ll now rely on Geraldine to offer some competition
surely she can put a stop to these annual renditions

Anne McCarthy & Gemma were close this year we thought
the last 18 holes of the season would give the result we all sought
But Gemma went and blew it and Anne McCarthy played worse
so again we have to listen to another b****y verse!

Maybe we shouldn’t begrudge her, the time will come too soon
when she’s far too old or arthritic for golf and she’ll sing a different tune
She can’t keeping going ad infinitum she’ll soon play bad and loose
in the meantime I’ll keep practicing and be ready to step into her shoes

So through gritted teeth I’ll pat her back and say well done once more
and be thinking
make the most of it old girl you can’t keep bringing in a score
my time will come and yours will go until that happens I plea
everything you know about golf, please will you teach me!

Mary also collected the birdie tree, Silver medal and Rose Bowl Matchplay Trophy. Rosita collected the rose bowl runners up prize and reiterated that it was a great match taken to the 19th hole. Gemma McMahon won the par pyramid and collected the Junior cup with Lady Captain Teresa Fitzpatrick runner up and again a fabulous match which ended on the 22nd hole! The Barry McGuigan Matchplay Trophy was won by Elaine Hamilton and Eileen Maguire runner up. The silver spoon also went to Eileen Maguire and the bronze medal went to a very ecstatic Noleen McCague who didn’t think she’d done enough to win anything! Brid Finlay collected a prize for the last ever ILGU Pendant.

Matters quickly moved on to the AGM and Teresa Fitzpatrick the outgoing Lady Captain eloquently thanked her committee for all their hard work throughout the year and the outgoing Secretary Anne McCarthy gave a very comprehensive report about Teresa’s year followed by Maureen’s Treasurers report. Teresa Fitzpatrick then introduced the new Lady Captain Elaine Hamilton who was warmly welcomed by the ladies who then in turn asked Noleen McCague to join her as her vice-captain. The new committee was then elected. Secretary-Bridie Keenan, Treasurer-Maureen Lynch, Handicap Secretary-Mary O’Toole, PRO-Mary Trant, committee members Joy Cassidy (you don’t get off that lightly Joy!), Brid Finlay, Eileen Kerr, Doli Maguire, Anne McCarthy (no time off for you either!) and one of our newer ladies Veronica McGorman. Proceedings were concluded and the ladies were invited to stay for the supper and a bit of Karaoke. What a packed afternoon!

Week 5 Results

The 9-hole stableford Winter League continues and still at the top are team 7 with 232, Irene Rooney 12, Nuala Browne 18 and Geraldine Igoe 22 (yes 22 Wow!! Well done!) Team 1 have made it into 2nd place with 223 Mary Trant 13, Irene McConkey 17 and Helen Connolly 17. Team 3 are third with 218 Vera Tighe with a fabulous 20, Eileen Kerr 14 and Celeste McKiernan 10. Mixed Foursomes Matchplay Result

Do remember that really bad Saturday of the Bank Holiday weekend? You know when there were gale force winds and horizontal rain? Well that’s when the finalists of the mixed foursomes matchplay chose to contest their match! The first 9 holes weren’t too bad with a glimmer of sunshine promising a better day than expected, Gene McEnroe & Mary Trant held their own against the favourites Patrick McCarville and Irene Rooney only 2 down after 9. However the superior golf of Packie and Irene was more than evident over the ensuing holes and as the rain and wind increased Gene and Mary struggled to match Packie’s fabulous long shots and pin point accuracy and Irene’s spot on putting and their spirits weren’t the only things dampened! Gene & Mary didn’t bring their best game on the day and congratulations go to Packie McCarville and Irene Rooney who won with a Ross Fisher margin of 4 & 3. Commiserations to Mary & Gene a new pairing, who were delighted to have made it as far as the final and will give it another go next year!

Alpha-Bet

The letters drawn in last week’s Alpha Bet were FRKZ and there were no winners of the 3,100 jackpot which now rolls over to 3,200. The 5 lucky dippers each winning 20 were Deirdre McGuigan Clones, M & J McAdoo Newbliss, Siobhan Smith C/O Cavan General, Liam Brogan Clones and Bridie Keenan Ballybay.

Clones Golf Club Bridge Club

The Bridge Club played for the cup the week before last and congratulations go to the winners Mary McGorman and Mary Lennon. In 2nd spot were Nat Doonan and Mary McGuigan and in third place Vera Tighe and Maureen Lynch. Anyone wishing to join the Bridge Club should come along on a Wednesday evening to the clubhouse.

Ladies Winter League

The results of the first week’s “old course” 9 hole stableford Ladies Winter League are as follows: In 1st spot Team 4 with 45 points- Catherine Farrell 16, Noreen McKenna 17 and Noleen McCague 12. In joint second place are Team 1 and Team 2 with 44 points. Team 1-Mary Trant 17, Mary McGuigan 14 and Irene McConkey 13. Team 2-Rosita McCabe 17, Lyn Whelan 15 and Martha O’Grady 12. In joint 4th place are teams 3 & 8. Team 3 Vera Tighe 15, Eileen Maguire 13 and Celeste McKiernan 14. Team 8-Joy Cassidy 13, Elaine Hamilton 15 and Gemma McMahon 14. In 6th place are Team 7-Irene Rooney 12, Josie Curran 11 and Geraldine Igoe 16. In 7th place Team 5- Marie Douglas 18 and Doli Maguire 9 and holding up the table are team 6 Una O’Reilly 8 and Anne McCarthy 13. With 3 cards from each team to count every week it is vital that Team Captains encourage as many of their team members to play as possible.

Matchplay Mistake!

Never rely on clubhouse gossip for details of how matches go! The Junior Cup played between Lady Captain Teresa Fitzpatrick and Gemma McMahon actually went down to the final putt on the 20th hole and not the 19th as previously reported. With Gemma conceding 7 shots (not 4 shots as previously reported) Gemma won holes 1,2,5,7,8 and 9 including a fine chip- in par at the 5th, and with Teresa only managing wins on holes 3 and 6 by the 11th hole Gemma was 5 holes up. Teresa decided to give herself a stiff talking to and managed to win the 12th halve the 13th and win the 14th 15th 16th and 17th ! So it was all square down the 18th and with both ladies coming off with a 6 it was down the 19th which was again halved. Both Teresa and Gemma were putting for pars on the par 3, 20th hole, Gemma got hers and LC didn’t. What an exciting match and again well done Gemma and hard luck Teresa.

Alpha-Bet

The 5 lucky dippers each winning 20 were Anna Woods, Analore, Annie McGinn Newbliss, Helen Watters C/O Cavan General, Chas Lynch C/O Carlton Brothers and Margaret Rehill Scotshouse. Well done to them. Draw every Monday night in the clubhouse tickets are 1 pound or one euro and you win in the corresponding currency.

Mixed Matchplay Final Saturday

The last semi final of the mixed foursomes matchplay took place on Sunday last with Nat Doonan and Anne McCarthy meeting Gene McEnroe and Mary Trant. Despite Gene and Mary conceding 5 shots to their opponents it’s fair to say that Anne & Nat didn’t bring their “A” game with them and congratulations go to Gene McEnroe and Mary Trant who took full advantage with a 6 & 5 win. Gene and Mary now meet Patrick McCarville and Irene Rooney on Saturday for the final showdown! Good luck to both couples.

Ladies Winter League

The first week of the Ladies Winter League attracted 54 entries for the 9 hole repeater stableford competition. The weather certainly played its part. The first week’s scores will be published next week. Ladies Winter League

Well the great weather this week should surely tempt the ladies out for the first week of the Winter League. Ladies you have until Saturday to get your first cards in. The weeks run from Sunday to Saturday. Remember any hole not finished out in this stableford “old” 9 holer or any 3 putt or more will result in a 10 cent fine for charity! So think long and hard before you automatically reach for the putter just off the green! The teams are as follows: Team 1-Mary Trant, Mary McGuigan, Irene McConkey, Helen Connolly and Ann Slowey. Team 2-Rosita McCabe, Lyne Whelan, Martha O’Grady, Margaret Copas and Bridie Keenan. Team 3-Vera Tighe, Eileen Maguire, Eileen Kerr, Celeste McKiernan and Veronica McGorman. Team 4-Catherine Farrell, Brid Finlay, Noeleen McCague, Noreen McKenna and Mary O’Reilly. Team 5- Ann Keating, Marie Douglas, Doli Maguire, Lady Captain Teresa Fitzpatrick and Beatrice Crudden. Team 8- Joy Cassidy, Elaine Hamilton, Gemma McMahon, Maureen Lynch and Annie Moore. Remember ladies you can play as often as you wish but only one of your cards will count each week. Could the Team Captains kindly contact their team members with all the information. Enjoy!

Well Matched Matchplayers!

The final of the Barry McGuigan Matchplay Trophy took place last Saturday between Eileen Maguire and Elaine Hamilton and with 5 shots conceded by Elaine, she found it tough enough being 3 down at one stage. However Elaine kept her cool and chipped away at Eileen’s lead to get the match back to all square going down the 18th. Both ladies were just on the 18th green with their 3rd shots and with the pin right at the back of the green Eileen Maguire putted her ball up beside the pin and was given the 5. Elaine then stood up to her putt and miracle of miracles her ball disappeared into the hole for a 4! Well done to both ladies a magnificent match and a good win for Elaine. The final of the Rose Bowl was also played on Saturday between Rosita McCabe and Mary Trant and with Mary conceding just one shot to Rosita it was a nip and tuck battle all the way. The ladies were never more that 1 hole up or down and indeed for the majority of the match it was all square. Rosita and Mary couldn’t be separated on the 18th either and headed down the 19th. Sadly Rosita got into trouble off the tee and Mary took full advantage and put her ball beside the green for 2 against Rosita’s 3. So it was down to chipping and putting and Mary had the better luck just pipping Rosita at the post! The ladies would like to thank all their spectators for their interest and for letting them through on the back stretch of the course. Well done again to Elaine and Mary. We now await with much interest the result of the Junior Cup between Lady Captain Teresa Fitzpatrick and Gemma McMahon.

Par Pyramid & Birdie Tree

This year’s Par Pyramid was won by Gemma McMahon with 21 pars just beating Noeleen McCague who had 20 and Nuala Brown a very close 3rd with 18. Well done ladies. The Birdie Tree was won by Mary Trant with 8 birdies.

And Finally.....

A note for your diary. The Captains’ Dinner will be held at The Creighton Hotel on Saturday 14th November and Captain Leslie McConkey and Lady Captain Teresa Fitzpatrick would be delighted if you would join them to celebrate their year.

Full details next week. Clones Golf Club would like to take this opportunity of thanking Eugene and Mary McCaughey for their continued generous support of this annual open weekend.

Ladies Winter League

The teams have now been drawn for the ladies 9-hole Winter league and play commences on Sunday 11th October. Remember ladies you can play as many times as you with but only one card per week per person counts towards the team scores. A penalty for putting is being introduced to this year’s league to sharpen up your chipping and putting skills ready for the new season! So ladies think hard before you automatically reach for the putter if you are just off the green, because if you 3 putt on any hole whether you are on the green or not, you will be fined 10 cents for charity. Please make a note of 3 putts on your card to assist Anne when marking the cards.

Matchplay Update

Congratulations to Eileen Maguire who beat fellow left handed Eileen Kerr in the semi final of the Barry McGuigan Matchplay Trophy. Eileen will now meet Elaine Hamilton in the final good luck ladies!

3 T’s at Slieve Russell

Last Thursday Captain Leslie McConkey, vice captain Ollie Walsh, lady vice captain Elaine Hamilton, and 3T’s winner Mary Trant headed off to the Slieve Russell early in foggy conditions. By the time the quartet arrived the fog started to clear to reveal a beautiful sunny warm day. Unfortunately Paddy Gumley missed out (winner of the men’s competition) as he was unwell but Ollie stepped into the breach at the last minute. It’s fair to say that whilst the course was in perfect condition and the weather couldn’t have been better the golf on the day left a lot to be desired. However the team did their best to qualify for the K-Club but alas it was not to be. The Slieve Russell were excellent hosts as too were the boys from the GUI. The team had a great day (which I believe is what one says when the golf shouldn’t be asked about!) and they thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Maybe next year eh guys?

Alpha Bet

The letters drawn in last week’s Alpha Bet were ZNCW and there were no winners of the 2,500 jackpot. The 5 lucky dippers each winning 20 were Cecilia Thompson Newbliss, Joan Egerton Roslea, B. Captain’s Prize to the Ladies

Captain Mr. Leslie McConkey’s prize to the ladies was held last Thursday in appallingly wet and windy conditions. This pre-drawn stroke competition was much coveted and the ladies fought hard to be among the number in the winner’s enclosure this coming Saturday night. Captain Leslie was on hand to meet and greet the ladies as they came in off the course wet and dejected and he was met with “sorry Leslie, we did our best but no good”. The course was playing very tough and the scores reflected the difficult conditions. No one escaped the downpours no matter what time they played. The importance of the occasion also provoked some uncharacteristic golf with usually steady players losing 3 or 4 balls on one hole and ladies scoring double figures on holes, that they would usually par, it was all very odd. However, many congratulations to the winner who was delighted when she heard the news and let out a rousing “whoooop!” because it’s a long time since she was in the prizes, well done to Brid Finlay (21) with a nett 74. In 2nd place Mary Trant (15) with 78 nett and the gross went Marie Douglas (19) with 98. Well done ladies!

Fixture Focus

Thursday 27th August sees the conclusion to the 4 ball better ball competition and the following Thursday 3rd September is the last major in the ladies calendar and again this is a pre-drawn competition so please check locker room for playing partners for the Monaghan Property Sales Trophy, good luck!

Learner Ladies

The introduction to golf evenings for ladies, continues each Tuesday from 6.30 pm and if there are any younger lassies wishing to have a go, the juvenile golf takes place on Mondays from 7.00 pm. The ladies lessons will conclude at the end of August BUT don’t despair because Brid Finlay is organising a few sessions with a professional for a very reasonable fee so if you are interested in a bit of professional one to one please contact Brid.

And Finally.....

Lady Captain Mrs Teresa Fitzpatrick along with the ladies committee and all the ladies in the club wish Leslie McConkey the best of luck for his big day on Saturday! May the sun shine, may the scores be great and most of all may you enjoy every moment of your day.

Mary is delighted to have lost a shot and is back to 15. Section 21-28 winner with a rather modest 80 nett was Ann McCarthy (21), the least said the better! Open Weekend Results

The Clones Credit Union sponsored stableford Open Weekend was well supported and despite the lightening on the Saturday which sent golfers scurrying to leave the course some fabulous scores were returned particularly by the men. Winner of the lovely barbeque in the men’s section was Marty Gunne with a very fine 42 points and just shy with 41 points was Fergal Reilly who picked up the luggage. The ladies winner, who has been in form recently was Marie Douglas with 34 points. Marie played with two gents who weren’t going well and suggested walking in but Marie said they should stick it out and despite three 1 point scores on her card she managed to put together a winning score, well done Marie enjoy the barbeque! In second place was Mary Trant with 32 points, with only 11 points on the front 9 Mary pulled out all the stops to card a good back 9 and was delighted to accept the luggage. Once again, huge thanks to Clones Credit Union Limited for their generous sponsorship.

Great Day Out

7 ladies from Clones Golf Club travelled to Enniskillen on Saturday last to compete in their open day. The ladies were welcomed by Lady Captain and Lady President and treated to scones, strawberries and tea before heading for the 1st tee. Several of the ladies had been successful in past competitions at Enniskillen and were determined to be collecting one of the beautiful prizes and the end of the day. Sadly, despite the weather being wonderfully warm and the course in immaculate condition, the golf from the Clones ladies was modest enough with the best of the scores coming from Irene Rooney however the rest of the ladies, Maureen Lynch, Kathleen Leonard, Mary Trant, Vera Tighe, Doli Maguire and Noreen McKenna agreed it was a great day out and thoroughly enjoyed the course and the hospitality of the Enniskillen ladies.

Alpha-Bet

Last Out Comes First
Last Saturday Lady Captain Teresa Fitzpatrick welcomed the ladies who were to play for her coveted prize. All the hard work by the committee was evident with the clubhouse looking resplendent and the prize table gleaming with the beautiful jewellery on display. The ladies played in muggy hot conditions and some found it tough going. The pins were in fair positions and suited one lady down to the ground. The last lady to tee off Eileen Maguire (31) stormed home with a 60 nett! Congratulations Eileen who played an unspectacular round of steady golf with one overs, a couple of pars and double bogeys. Eileen had no idea that she had carded such a low score and asked her marker to check that it wasn’t 70 nett! Eileen is not only honoured to win Teresa’s beautiful watch but thrilled at the 5 shot cut to her handicap. The runner up is one of our newer ladies Gemma McMahon (33) who carded a magnificent 66 nett with 2 birdies in her round. The gross was claimed by Catherine Farrell with 86. Catherine said she is pleased to be back playing decent golf again. Section A winner was Lynne Whelan 69 nett and 2nd was Irene Rooney 72 nett. Section B winner was Mary McGuigan 69 nett and 2nd Anne McCarthy 71 nett Section C winner Noreen McKenna 71 nett and 2nd Celesta McKiernan 74 nett. Teresa thanked everybody who had helped her throughout her year so far, particularly her committee, family and friends. Alpha-Bet

The letters drawn in last week’s Alpha-Bet were “way out” and as no one selected EXIT the jackpot rolls over to 2,300 next week. The 5 lucky dippers each winning 20 were Avril Patterson Lisnaskea, Nessa McKenna Clones, Edmund Burke Scotshouse, Josie Kearns Cavan Hospital and Fabiola Martin Newbliss. Well done to them! The draw takes place each Monday night in the clubhouse around 9pm and remember the more tickets we sell the less likely subs are to increase.

Ladies Club

Ladies the first 18-hole stableford competition of the season concludes on Thursday 19th March having commenced on Sunday last. The ladies that played last weekend were suitably shattered after the full 18 holes and they will be addressing their stamina levels immediately! Next week Sunday 22nd March and Thursday 26th March is another 18 hole stableford and will the prize sponsors ensure that their prizes are available please.

Spring League

Week 5 results and The Goodnight Girls still lead on 280 with the week’s contributors being Irene McConkey 19, Noleen McCague 18 and Kathleen Leonard 19. With high scoring consistency like that they will be hard to knock off the top spot. 2nd are team 4 with 267 and Team captain Vera Tighe headed up the scoring with 17 points, Lynn Whelan 16 and Martha O’Grady .....well now what happened to Martha, she must have forgotten her clubs or something as she only managed 14 points! The magnificent 7 are maintaining third place with 256 and team captain Catherine Farrell is absolutely thrilled for Maureen Lynch who carded 20 points, the best score of the week! Doli Maguire returned 18 and Catherine herself had 19 points another good week for the Magnificents! Captain’s Choice are in 4th position with 237 and Joy Cassidy had 18 points with Eileen Kerr and Lady Captain Teresa Fitzpatrick both carding 14 points. Still on the bottom of the table are Team 5 with 215 points despite good scores from Anne McCarthy and Eileen Maguire both 17 points and an uncharacteristic 13 points from team captain Rosita McCabe.
The final week’s scores were not available at the time of going to press but I am reliably informed that there was only 3 points between the first and second placed teams on Saturday morning, the last day of the competition. What an exciting finish! The final scores will be in next week’s edition.

And Finally.......

Any ladies going to Rossapenna on the Lady Captain’s weekend away please ensure that you have paid your 50 euro deposit to Teresa as she paid on your behalf in advance.

Not much happening in the ladies club for the month of January but we are all excitedly awaiting the start of the Spring League which will hopefully commence in February. The League will run along the same lines as the Xmas Hamper league so as soon as the list goes up make sure you are on it ready for the draw for teams. There are still a few hardy ladies out and about on the course and it was nice to see Kathleen Leonard back after such a long absence what with gallivanting abroad, being whisked away for Christmas and then being laid up with the flu, Kathleen was mad to get back on the course and try out her new clubs and my they suit her well! 17 points for 9 holes, not bad after a 2 month break!
