Subs Remain Static

The 96th A.G.M. of Clones Golf Club was held in the clubhouse last Sunday, outgoing president Mr Paul Flynn presided. Following the reading and adoption of last year’s minutes Mr Gerard Kelly went through the audited financial acc in detail. Gerard singled out our club lotto as one of the best ways to increase funds if only more members supported it, however due to the present economical climate and lack of new members it was felt that an increase in subscriptions was one way of clawing back our deficit. This proposal was later put to the floor in an overwhelming vote was defeated. The subscription for 2009 remains at €600.00 for a single member. i.e. €50.00 per month by Direct Debit. The secretary Mr Martin Taylor in presenting his report to the members, stated that our main problem was that we have the expenditure of an 18 hole course with the income associated with 9 holes. Some ideas to be considered was the input of voluntary work from members. The secretary thanked those members who already give time to the club, Fred Meehan, Vincent Lynch, Nat Doonan, Mickey Connolly and all who sell lotto tickets, thanks to Mary Logue behind the bar Margaret and her staff in the kitchen .Martin then thanked the officers who he had worked with over the past year, Mr Gerard Kelly and Mr Paul Flynn. Election of Management committee then followed, Mr Francie Lynch, Mr Paddy Mc Keown, Mr Sean Kelleher, Mr Gerard Kelly Mr Rodney Lyons, Mrs Maureen Lynch, Mrs Margaret Copas and Noreen McKenna. Secretary Mr Martin Taylor Treasurer Mr Gerard Kelly did not go forward for re election leaving this position vacant for the moment. There was two positions for trustees vacant and these were filled by Mr Paul Flynn and Mr Vincent Lynch. The President Mr Liam Quigley thanked all those who put their names forward for election and to all the members who attended, he especially thanked Mr Gerard Kelly for his work for the past 4 years as treasurer, he then brought the meeting to a close.

Ladies Winter League

The week 9 results saw Class Act sadly slip into last place (247) as only Vera Tight returned a score 13 points. In 5th place were Pink ladies (260) and well done to Gemma McMahon 14 points and Rosita McCabe 9 points, every little helps. Cathy’s Kittens nudged into 4th (265) with Beatrice Crudden on 14 points and Doli Maguire with 17. In 3rd spot the now inappropriately named Lazy Bees (278) with scores from Veronica McGorman 15 and Eileen Maguire (two of our news ladies, great stuff!). The Iron Maidens have claimed 2nd spot (281) with Joy Cassidy’s 13 points and Martha O’Grady a magnificent 20 points. Still in pole position and unlikely to be caught at this stage at The Cannibals (297) with Lynn Whelan carding 15 points and Anne McCarthy 15. All very exciting!

Winners are Cannibals!

Congratulations to The Cannibals who maintained their lead and claimed victory in the 10 week long Winter league with a splendid 331 points. Mary Trant (team captain) and Noleen McCague both contributed 17 points in the final week and Mary is delighted with her team who rose to the challenge, each one playing their part. So the lovely hampers go to Mary Trant, Anne McCarthy, Noleen McCague, Mary O’Reilly, Josie Curran and Lynn Whelan. The Iron Maidens maintained 2nd place with 318 with a magnificent final push from the team encouraged by team captain Joy Cassidy. Caroline Bailey came up trumps with 18 points and Martha O’Grady was on fire on Saturday carding 16 points on the first 5 holes alone, have you ever seen anyone get 5 points on one hole? Well I had the privilege of being in her honoured company and witnessed a very nice birdie on the par 5, 3rd where dear Martha has 2 shots! It’s obscene, 5 points on one hole! Anyway Martha choked and finished with 3 one pointers and a no score, still 19 points though! The Lazy Bees finished 3rd (305) with Lady Vice Captain Elaine Hamilton 14 points and Ann Keating 13 points. Pink Ladies 4th (299) Una O’Reilly a magnificent 20 points and Lorraine Brady a fabulous 19 points. Class Act managed to pull themselves on the bottom of the league (272) and finished 5th with Vera Tight 12 and Lady Captain Teresa Fitzpatrick 13 and finally in 6th place Cathy’s Kittens (265) with a great score from Doli Maguire 19 points made in freezing conditions and Beatrice Crudden 14 points. Well done to everyone who took part, a big thank you to Anne McCarthy for organising the league and in recognition of everyone’s enthusiasm and commitment to this competition there will be a prize for everyone! Hooray! So please come along on Thursday to the clubhouse at 8.15 pm to collect your festive fare!

Packie GOY 2008

The winner of the coveted Golfer of the Year award for 2008 went to Patrick McCarville and he was presented with his prize on Saturday night at the Captains’ Dinner Dance. Patrick said that his consistent golf was due, in no small part, to the great condition of the course in Clones and offered his praise and congratulations to Paddy McKeown, Course Convenor and the green keepers. The Captains Dinner Dance, held in the Creighton Hotel Clones was very successful and Captain Paul Fitzpatrick and Lady Captain Mrs. Noreen McKenna would like to thank everyone who made the effort to come along and support them. They would particularly like to thank the Creighton Hotel for a fabulous meal and their superb hospitality. A great night was had by all who attended and the final presentation for the men’s matchplay trophies took place on the night. Details next week. The winners of the mixed matchplay were presented with their prize and congratulations go to Mike Keane and Patricia Brady who defeated Michael Connolly and Vera Tighe despite Michael & Vera being 5 up at one stage indeed if they hadn’t lost the first hole they would have claimed the match 6 & 5! My apologies to Mike & Patricia who were given only 10 shots and not 20 as reported last week, ooops! Got my maths wrong!

Alpha-bet

The letters drawn for last week’s Alpha Bet were CANZ and there were no winners of the 6,200 jackpot. After week 4 the Cannibals are still heading the Winter League with 132 points after Noleen McCague 14 points and Anne McCarthy 15 points were added but their lead has been cut by 2 points as Class Act had a good week and moved into 2nd place on their own with Vera Tighe carding 17 points and Celesta McKiernan 14 points. Iron Maidens had another good week with Martha O’Grady carding 16 points and Caroline Bailey 13 points and they are just behind in 3rd spot with 119 points. Just 1 point behind and in 4th spot with 118 points are Pink Ladies with Una O’Reilly 15 points and Rosita McCabe 13 points. The Lazy Bees have moved off the bottom of the league with a storming week by team captain Marie Douglas 18 points and in form Eileen Maguire scoring a fabulous 20 points! Maybe a different name for the team now ladies? Just slipping into 6th place despite very good scores are Cathy’s Kittens with 108 points Well done Beatrice Crudden 15 points and Lady Captain Noreen McKenna 16 points. Come on ladies there is still time to knock the Cannibals off their perch, 6 weeks to go!

Ann Keating wins Rose Bowl

Congratulations to Ann Keating on winning the final of the Rose Bowl defeating Vera Tighe on the 18th in what was a nip and tuck match between these two consistent golfers. Well done Ann and hard luck Vera, it’s not been a good week for Vera has it?

And Finally......................

Everyone was very sad to hear that Eileen Kerr lost her Mum at the weekend, our thoughts and prayers are with Eileen, Jim and their family at this difficult time.

The results for week 3 still sees the cannibals in the lead on 103 points with team captain Mary Trant carding 15 points and Lyn Whelan 19 points. There are 3 teams in joint 2nd place on 90 points Iron Maidens with Maureen Lynch carding 15 points and Irene Rooney also 15. Pink ladies with team Captain Una O'Reilly 16 points and Una McCarra also 16, that’s Una Power that is! Class Act with Patricia Brady 15 points and Celesta McKiernan also 15. In 5th spot are Cathy's Kittens with 77 points with just one score returned from Doli Maguire 18 points. In 6th place are the lazy bees with 72 points Eileen Maguire 17 points and Ann Keating 14 points. Glad to see the lazy bees are now getting out and making a move, it's not too late, there are 6 weeks left and I have it on good authority that a couple of the teams have twenty pointers carded for week 4 and not from the cannibals so the leader board could all change next week!

Matthews’ Weekend Results

You may remember we had a glorious weekend recently and the previously postponed Matthews Weekend was scheduled to make good use of the wonderful weather and the fabulous condition of the course. Martin Carey set the standard and produced a magnificent score of 42 points to win the weekend away in a Jury’s Hotel of his choice. In 2nd spot winning the dining experience in The Old Post with 40 points was Kevin Collins and Benny Igoe claimed the third spot with 39 points, his prize dinner for 2 in The Creighton Hotel. The ladies winners were Eileen Maguire with 36 points in second place Rosita McCabe with 34 points and 3rd Lyn Wheelan with 33 points. Rosita admitted she has tried to persuade her sister Eileen to take up golf for years and now Eileen is proving tough competition for Rosita she wondered if she did the right thing! Only kidding!! Well done Eileen and enjoy your weekend away. Our very generous sponsors Eugene & Mary McCaughey (Matthews of Clones & Monaghan) have supported this competition for the last 16 years and Eugene very kindly presented the prizes to the winners last Monday week. He said that he was delighted to support the ladies club in the running of this annual competition and hoped that it would continue to be a good fund raiser for the club. Both 1st prize winners Martin Carey and Eileen Maguire were overwhelmed with the wonderful prize and both said that they hadn’t decided who to take with them yet!

Level Par for Packie!

What a weekend! The Clarke’s Group sponsored Monthly Medal for October and indeed the last major gig of the season took place last weekend and it’s fair to say that Saturday was a pussycat compared to the roaring lion of a day that Sunday turned out to be with tremendous high winds and squally sideways rain. Only the bold and the beautiful played on Sunday! (Eh Sean?) Not surprisingly the winning scores came from the calmer conditions of Saturday and Jason Swaine (16) made sure that the last Monthly Medal of the year was won with a fantastic score and huge congratulations go to him for his fabulous 64 nett. In 2nd place with 69 nett was Kevin Collins on a countback and the round of the day went to the gross winner who went round in level par with a magnificent 2 under par back 9, congratulations to Patrick McCarville, great going!

Granda George

Victory in the scratch cup is usually reserved for the young, supple, hot shots in the club so it was with great delight and pride that George Crowe arrived back into the clubhouse on Saturday to enjoy his victory over Gavin Maguire in this prestigious matchplay competition. George admitted that it was hard going and it was nip and tuck the whole way round until George managed to par the 17th winning the hole, going down the 18th 1 up. George clinched the match on the last. He shared his delight with a few of our more mature members in the clubhouse and said “it’s not often a Granda wins this trophy!”. Well done George and commiserations to Gavin.

Defending Champs on Form

The winners of last year’s Mixed Foursomes Matchplay Trophy Michael Connolly & Vera Tighe are on form again this year and are yet again in the final having beaten Pat & Rosita McCabe at the weekend. They now await the winners of the Michael Dowds & Marie Douglas-v-Mike Keane & Patricia Brady semi. It’s so exciting!

Halloween 3-Person Team

Bank Holiday weekend is fast approaching and to mark the occasion there will be a 3 person team over the 3 days from Saturday 25th October to Monday 27th October. This will be a stableford repeater and the teams can be any combination. Remember though, the clocks turn back this weekend so it’ll be dark earlier on Sunday & Monday, but on the plus side....an extra hour in bed! Timesheet tel: 047 56017

Ladies League

The ladies winter league is being well supported and producing some good scores. It has been decided to reward every team with points so no one team feels that winning is beyond reach, so after week 2 the team in 1st place is Mary Trant’s team The Cannibals with 69 points and this week’s scorers were Noleen McCague and Anne McCarthy both with 18 points apiece. In 2nd spot are Una O’Reilly’s team with 62 points and again Una & Rosita McCabe came up with the points with 15 and 17 respectively. In joint 3rd with 60 points are Joy Cassidy’s team with Joy carding 17 points and Maureen Lynch 14 points and Vera Tighe’s team (Class Act) with Vera and Teresa Fitzpatrick both carding 14 points. In 5th place with 59 points is Catherine Farrell’s team with Catherine’s 16 points and Lady Captain Noreen McKenna with 12 points. Bringing up the rear with 41 points are Marie Douglas’ team with Eileen Maguire carding 17 points and Elaine Hamilton 10. We are now in week 3 of this 10 week competition to it’s still all to play for. Please note any lady in a prize winning team who hasn’t played at least 4 weeks of the 10 will not be entitled to claim a prize. So come on ladies it’s only 9 holes, do it for the team! Oh by the way, only 2 teams have given their team a name, so get your thinking caps on!

The climax of this year’s mixed foursomes matchplay competition is now upon us and with Mickey Dowds and Marie Douglas set to play Patricia Brady and Mike Keane in one half of the semi-final and Pat & Rosita McCabe playing Michael Connolly and Vera Tighe in the other semi-final, it will surely be an exciting final in prospect. Congratulations to these four couples who have battled their way through several rounds to get to this stage, no mean feat.

Matthews Weekend

Matthews Weekend was a huge success, the course was in fine shape, the weather was fantastic and the competition attracted a big field of competitors. Thank you to Genie & Mary McCaughey of Matthews of Clones for their generous sponsorship. Results next week!

Ladies Winter League

The first week of the ladies winter league “Teams for Xmas Hampers” was well supported and Mary Trant’s team “The Cannibals” (the last confession of Alexander Pearce, was too long a name so we plumped for his nick name “the Clones Cannibal” instead!). Anyway Mary’s team are leading at this early stage with 5 points. Well done to Lyn Whelan 17 points and Mary Trant 16 points. The team in 2nd place earning 2 points, are Team 1 captained by Vera Tighe and it was Vera herself who had 15 points along with 17 points from Celesta McKiernan well done ladies. In joint 3rd place each claiming 1 point were teams 4 & 5 Team 4 captained by Una O’Reilly who had 14 points and team mate Rosita McCabe with 16 points. Catherine Farrell (team 5) relied on her team members to card the point earning scores, that’s the sign of a good Captain, well delegated Catherine! and congratulations go to Doli Maguire with 15 points and Helen Connolly also with 15 points. A great start ladies BUT team 6 only had 1 of their ladies play in week one, come on, your team needs you! Team Captains please get names for your teams as soon as possible.

This year Ann has kindly agreed to organise a Winter League for the Christmas Hampers and is looking for ladies to get their names down on her list immediately as the draw will be done very shortly. The league will run along similar lines to last year all details will be in the ladies locker room.

Course stands up to Battering

The optimists amongst us headed out to the golf club on Saturday last in the hope that the weather men had got their predictions of a severe weather warning wrong. Sadly it couldn't have been more accurate and Clones was closed whilst the optimists watched from the comfort of the clubhouse, the course suffer the torrential downpours. Most of the greens were awash and the 9th fairway actually had a river running across it. Remarkably the course re-opened on Sunday morning and was in fine shape with only the debris left behind by the torrent of the previous days water giving away the severity of the onslaught, but the course in Clones stood the test and everyone that played on Sunday marvelled at how dry the course was.

President's Prize

President Mr. Paul Flynn was delighted to accomodate all the GAA football fans by re-scheduling the date on which his prize was to be competed for and finally it took place on Sunday 10th August. The result was worth waiting for as the overall winner carded a magnificent score of 63 nett. The men's prize winners were 1st Niall Murphy with 66 nett, 2nd Marty Carey 69 nett and the gross went to Seamus Keenan. The ladies prize winners were kathleen Leonard 71 nett. Kathleen "my putter's hot" Leonard recenlty rediscovered her form after having her confidence restored following a fine victory in the matchplay trophy. Gemma McMahon having recently had her first win was delighted to accept 2nd place with 73 nett and also pleased that her handicap is now down to 32. Catherine Farrell won the gross.

Captain's Prize

Gentlemen you only have a few more days to get your game in shape for the biggie, yes it's Mr. Paul Fitzpatrick's Captain's Prize which takes place on Saturday 30th August. The draw has now been done and a list of playing partners and times are in the locker room.

Alpha-Bet

The letters drawn in last weeks Alpha Bet lotto draw were SHOX and there were no winners of the 5,000 jackpot which rolls over to next week at 5,100. Pick up an envelope wherever you see the Alpha Bet posters, draw every Monday evening. Ask yourslef, do your letters look lucky?

Have you Lost It??

Have you checked your clubs lately? There have been at least 15 clubs found on the course and handed in to the bar over the last few weeks. Please check to see if any of them might be yours. Also do you have a Callaway graphite shaft sand wedge in your bag that's not yours? One such club was kindly handed in for the rightful owner to collect and sadly when he went to collect it, it was missing. Please check your golf bags. There are also many club head covers behind the bar so if you are missing any equipment please check with Mary behind the bar as she is drowning in golf equipment!

Ladies Club

Where have all the ladies gone?

Ladies, ladies it's not the end of the season just yet, I know the weather is telling us different but please don't hang up the clubs just yet. Very few played in last week's GOY stroke medal draw despite Thursday being an oasis of a day with warm sunshine amidst the wet week that surrounded it. The competition reverted to a sweep BUT those who did play will get their vital GOY points. Section A was won by Mary Trant with a score so embarrassingly high it's best kept out of the papers! Section B was won by Nuala Browne with a 76 nett. Nuala was the only player on the day to break 80 well done!

Captain's Prize to the Ladies

Mr. Paul Fitzpatrick's Captain's Prize to the ladies will be held on Thursday August 21st this is a pre-drawn stroke medal GOY. Indeed the last GOY competition of the season so lets do it justice and bring in some great scores for the Captain. Good luck to everyone. List of playing partners in the ladies locker room.

The draw for the matchplay trophies will take place very shortly so if you wish to take part ladies please put your names on the relevant list in the locker room. Junior Cup is for ladies with handicaps 27-36 and the Rose Bowl for 0-26.

Young Guns’ Classic Golf

Clones Golf Club’s own Classic is over for another year and it proved to be very successful despite the weather threatening to force a different outcome. In the end the Classic ran over 5 days into the Bank Holiday Monday due to the torrential rains on Friday and thankfully all teams were accommodated and managed to get their rounds finished in relatively condusive conditions. The presentation of prizes took place last Tuesday and Pat Connolly (classic convenor) and Captain Paul Fitzpatrick got proceedings underway by thanking all involved. It would be foolish to think that we wouldn’t offend anyone by not mentioning individuals who worked so hard to make this event run smoothly and without incident. However Pat Connolly the Classic convenor said he would like to particularly thank Bank of Scotland (Ireland) our main sponsor; everyone was sorry that George Duke was unable to attend the presentation of prizes this year and Tom Cassidy kindly stepped forward to represent both George and the bank. Pat also thanked his team (they know who they are) they did such sterling work in staging this mammoth occasion. Anyone who played had nothing but praise for the condition of the course, the warm welcome in the clubhouse and the professional and diligent way everyone was served by both the catering staff and the bar staff. Special thanks go to all the raffle ticket sellers, the people who manned the book and to all our sponsors without whom this event could not have been run. We hope that by advertising the sponsors names over the 5 days in the clubhouse, this will go some small way to demonstrating our gratitude to our generous sponsors. Not surprisingly the winning scores were pretty fantastic also and what a pleasure it was to see four of our Young Guns winning this event with their usual enthusiasm and passion Congratulations go to Fergal Connolly, James Connolly, Jack McCarron and Ethan Audley winning the Ping Drivers with a score of 103 points (team sponsor Margaret Quigley). The Connolly boys will have to hide those drivers from dad as he has had his eye on one all week! Just pipped into to 2nd spot also on 103 points were Ray McCarron, Hugo Clerkin, Jack McCarron and Ethan Audley (Team sponsor Scanbitz). 3rd with 100 points were Stevie McCaffrey, J. Brown, Brendan Allen and Noel McElroy their prize-Padraig Harrington designed suit bags, Sponsor Ollie Swift. In 4th also with 100 points were K. Finlay, E. Finlay, K. Duffy and D. Lennon their prize-Golf club travel covers. Sponsor Leonard Engineering. In 5th spot also 100 points were C. Herron, P. Trappe, A. Trappe and D. McMahon winning Footjoy shoes, sponsor Hillgrove Hotel. 6th place 99 points, went to Joe Smith, George Crowe, Seamus Brady and Mike Keane. Prize watches, sponsor Univet. In 7th place with 97 points winning golf tops were Gary Sexton, Gary Smith, T. McKenna and J. Sexton, sponsor Conagra. The ladies team prize went to the McCarthy sisters Jo, Sinead, Ann and Beezy, (team sponsor Ann McCarthy) who were delighted with their watches (sponsored by Liptons of Clones) and particularly thanked Pat Connolly for having a ladies team prize. These ladies have been competing as a team since 2000 in Clones’ Classic and it’s the first time they have been in the winners enclose. Well done ladies. Nearest the pin went to Hugo Clerkin, men’s longest drive Joe McCann and the ladies longest drive went to Mary Trant. These prizes were kindly sponsored by Ciaran Smith professional from Rossmore. The raffle for the Powakaddy trolley and golf bag also proved to be a great success and the winner of the main prize was Teresa Smith from Nobber Co. Westmeath. Winners of the golf bags (sponsored by the club) were Francie Lynch and Paddy Devine. The wine (sponsored by Supervalu Cavan) went to Niall Wrafter and Shane Morgan. The golf themed ornaments (sponsored by Gerry & Mary Trant) went to Jim Monaghan and Carmel Lynch. Captain Paul Fitzpatrick, Lady Captain Noreen McKenna and President Paul Flynn would like to add their thanks to everyone involved in making this possibly one of the most successful classics ever and we hope to be able to confirm figures very shortly. Suffice to say that 65 teams played and all the tickets were sold for the raffle. Well done everyone.

Roisin Returns

It’s great to welcome Roisin Kerr (28) back to playing in the ladies weekly competitions and she didn’t let us down producing a fabulous score of 37 points in last week’s charity stableford competition. Congratulations Rosin, who’s score secured the win in Section B (21-28) and well done on your new handicap now 26. I’m delighted to report that one of our new ladies, who took up golf last summer through our ladies coaching programme, played her first ladies singles competition on Thursday and managed to win her section C (29-36) with an astonishing 36 points. Congratulations go to Eileen Maguire (36) for this fine performance. Eileen actually had 24 points on the back 9 and when asked what happened on the front 9, she said it took her a long time to settle down and realise her playing partners “were only human”! As one of them was her sister, she must have been scared of the other! That was Eileen’s polite way of saying they played rubbish! Many congratulations Eileen and well done on losing a shot off your handicap, great stuff! And finally, winner of Section A (0-20) was Joy Cassidy (18) with a modest 30 points, Joy was delighted with yet another win in her category and was surprised at the huge variance in the category scoring.

Teresa’s Top Score

Last week’s ladies single stroke GOY medal draw attracted a good number of our ladies onto the course and with fabulous weather on offer what an enjoyable experience it was. Teresa Fitzpatrick (29-39) outshone the field and posted the best score on the day with a nett 73 which resulted in a hefty 2 shot cut to her handicap. Congratulations to Teresa who now plays off 34 but more importantly claimed those valuable 10 GOY points. Winner of Section A (0-20) was Joy Cassidy (18) with nett 75. Joy thought her score was no where near good enough to be a winning score but it proved to be just right as the same score won Section B (21-28) and it’s great to see Nuala Browne (25) in the winners enclosure as she was just pipped at the post in the Ladies Open recently and was very much due a win. Nuala also got the chop from the handicap secretary and lost a shot now playing off 24. Ann McCarthy’s handicap was also reduced by 0.4 of a shot but still plays off 24. Congratulations to all the winners of GOY points, it’s really hotting up!

Weekend Away Wonderful

Lady Captain Mrs. Noreen McKenna was delighted with the huge success of her weekend away to Rosapenna Donegal. 17 ladies made the trip for the 3 days of golf on the ever changing links course. On the Friday the ladies were keen to familiarise themselves with the course and with the wind blowing a gale in the brilliant sunshine the ladies planned their strategies for the following days competition. However, the next day was a very different animal with hot sunshine and very little wind. Congratulations go to Joy Cassidy, who, feeling very much at home on the Old Tom Morris Course, carded the winning score, in second place was Martha O’Grady and Irene McConkey claimed 3rd spot. Joy and Irene made a repeat performance for the 9-hole Sunday competition and Lady Captain Mrs. Noreen McKenna got 2nd. The ladies were well and truly pampered with fine dining and dancing, swimming and saunas, rest and relaxation and wonderful luxurious surroundings. Can’t wait for next year ladies!

3 T’s Qualifier

Last Thursday the ladies played in the 3T’s (turning the tide against suicide) charity qualifier where this year the Lady Captain and the ladies club winner will travel to The Slieve Russell along with the men’s winner to play in the regional final. Maureen was pleased with her game but was convinced that as she had played well everybody else would have done so too but no-one was quite as good as her on the day. Well done Maureen and enjoy your day at the Slieve! Maureen, having received this great confidence boost to her golf, managed to card 21 points on the front 9 at Rosapenna on Saturday. Great going!

Open Weekend Results

The 3 day open stableford competition held over the Bank Holiday weekend was a huge success and attracted visitors from many clubs as well as players from our own club in a bid to win the beautiful furniture generously sponsored by Bank of Ireland (New Ireland) Assurance. Fionnuala McKenna, Lady Captain’s daughter, very kindly approached her employers to secure the sponsorship and Clones Ladies Club are very grateful for her efforts. The winner of the ladies competition with 32 points was Anne McCarthy, Anne was delighted to win as she believed her score would not be enough. In second spot, was a very proud Mary McGuigan, (30 points). This is Mary’s first win in a while. Mary has a great short game and it was a pleasure to see her in action around the greens. Just pipped into third spot on a countback was Lady Captain Mrs. Noreen McKenna, who was delighted to receive a prize and regretted that her daughter Fionnuala could not be there in person to present “mum” with her prize.

The men’s competition produced some fantastic scores and claiming first spot was Gary Sexton, one of our newer members, with a fine score of 42 points. Gary made a great acceptance speech acknowledging the warm welcome both he and his wife had received since joining Clones. Pat Fee Wins Deerpark

Wow, what a win to have as your first 18 hole singles victory. If you are gonna do it, do it big! Congratulations to Pat Fee who won the Deerpark Voucher on Sunday last with a stunning nett 64. Pat said “it was a weird day, everything just went right”. Pat managed to par all the par 3’s which went a long way to securing his win. Pat said he found the course very long with the markers right at the back on many on the tee boxes. (They don’t make this competition an easy one to win!) Pat had a few wobbles on the back 9 with a couple of double bogeys and was convinced that he had blown it, but he won by 3 clear shots from 2nd placed Gene McEnroe. The gross went to Gavin Maguire with 82. Well done gentlemen and to everyone who played.

2 Person Scramble

The winners of the 2 person scramble held on 12th and 13th of April were Sean Farmer and Kevin Duffy with nett 60 ¼ and in second place with a good bit of maths required to get the result Leo Herbert and Brendan McBrien with nett 61 ¾ nett ( doesn’t everybody hate working out fractions!) Ladies Club

Breffni Shield Results

Elaine Hamilton and Noleen McCague dovetailed beautifully last Thursday and produced the winning score of 70 nett in the Breffni Shield scotch foursomes. Both these ladies are starting the season on a positive note and no doubt we will see more of them in the winner’s enclosure as the year unfolds. The two Irenes (Rooney & McConkey) also made up a nice matching pair complementing each others golf to produce the 2nd placed score of 75 nett. Well done to these ladies who will be invited to play in the final at County Louth Golf Club on Thursday 22nd May.

Clones Pipped in Miele

The first round of the Miele sponsored All Ireland Interclub 4 Ball saw Clones competing against Enniskillen in this exciting simultaneous home and away format. The two Irenes (Rooney & McConkey) were again paired to take on the opposition away in Enniskillen but alas their winning formula eluded them. Rosita McCabe and Mary Trant also played away and had a hard fought nip and tuck battle with the opposition only managing to get ahead once in the match. Rosita hit some amazing drives and managed to sink a raker of a putt on the first to start the winning trail. Both players contributed to the result and Mary & Rosita just stole a win from Enniskillen on the 18th hole. Meanwhile back in Clones Joy Cassidy & Vera Tighe managed to secure a win but the other pairing Catherine Farrell and Elaine Hamilton weren’t so lucky. The ‘phone calls were made after all the matches were in, and the tension could be cut with a knife. With both clubs securing a win away it was down to counting the number of holes and sadly Clones missed out by one hole. However, we all had a great day and wish Enniskillen all the best in the next round. A special thank you to the respective caterers who looked after us so well, Maggie’s Kitchen in Clones and in Enniskillen they have found a real gem of a lassie in their new caterer who excelled on her first day with harsh and hungry critics to satisfy, which she did with a breeze.

What’s On This Week?

This Thursday April 24th is an 18-hole single stroke GOY Medal and the following week Thursday May 1st will also be 18 hole single stroke GOY Medal. Please note that the Ladies Open Day has been postponed to Thursday 24th July.

Ladies & Gents Open Weekend

You can play on Sunday 4th May and Monday 5th May in this repeater. Visitors fee €15 and members €10 (€8 for repeater). If you haven’t been to Clones for a while you will be amazed at the transformation of the clubhouse, locker rooms and the course. Come along and enjoy the Clones Experience. Time sheet in operation tel: 047 56017

And finally…………….

A big thank-you to Joy Cassidy and Irene Rooney for the informative evening held last Tuesday week. There was a great turnout of ladies, especially our new members and a good buzz about the place. Topics covered were etiquette on the course and the new handicap system with the main change being that your handicap can be increased as soon after the competition as the handicap secretary can manage to get the results, so you don’t have to wait until the end of the month any more and any scores from open days away at other clubs must be returned to your home club for handicap purposes. Also Ladies please be aware of any local rules e.g. placing, teeing up etc. These can change week by week and you must check the notices before you play.

McKeown Wins “Rollover” Week

Congratulations to Paddy McKeown, the winner of Week 6 of the Kelly Rahill sponsored Winter League with a magnificent score of 38 points for the 14 holes. Due to the extreme fog last weekend it was felt necessary to accommodate the “Sunday” golfers by extending the competition for a further week. Paddy took full advantage of the green roller brought in by the Course Convenor last Wednesday to make 4 birdies, 2 bogeys and 8 pars to score his 38 points off a handicap of 10. The benefits of rolling the greens were there for all to see and enjoy. Please keep the greens looking and playing great by mending those pitch marks.

Spare a thought for the 2nd placed Martin Carey 37 points who played the previous week in normal conditions. Had Martin putted on rolled Masters’ type greens, who knows what he could have scored. There will be a prize for Martin to acknowledge his magnificent score.

From Tucson to Texas

Having marvelled at Tiger strutting his stuff in the desert, it was time to play some serious sport in the clubhouse last Saturday night. Colm McMahon expertly organised our Texas hold ‘em poker night presided over by Shane Bonner and Raymond Hickey Jnr. There was a huge turnout for this popular event. Shane and Raymond gave a fabulous pre-tournament instruction course to the uninitiated, and then it was down to business. In an exciting climax to the evening, Sheriff Willie Lithgo shot down gunslinger Gerry Trant with the last turn of the final card to claim the spoils.

Alpha-Bet

Last week’s letters for the Alpha-Bet jackpot of 2,400 were VFNP and with no winners the jackpot rolls over to 2,500 (euro/stg). The five lucky dippers each winning 20 euro/stg. were Brian Conlon Newbliss, James Connolly Scotshouse, Gerald Lynch Clones, Samantha Bradford Swanns Cross and Annie Rose Ward Lisnaskea. Congratulations to them. Now ask yourself, do your letters look lucky?

Ladies Spring League

The ladies are taking their 9-hole stableford competition very seriously and are keen to support their team mates in this exciting League. In a dramatic turnaround from last week Law & Order have climbed another place and are just 1 point behind the Bridge Brigade who are on 112 points. Elaine Hamilton scored a magnificent 22 points with Doli Maguire bolstering the team’s score with a brilliant 19 points for Law & Order. The Dynamic Duo did it again for Bridge Brigade with Vera Tighe carding 19 points and Marie Douglas 17. Close behind in 3rd spot are The Blow Ins with 109 points and the week’s top scorers for the team were Eileen Kerr 19 points and Irene McConkey 17. Holding up the table with 97 points are Teacher’s Pets. Well done to Irene Rooney 16 points and Lady Captain Mrs. Noreen McKenna who wasn’t going to return her card, good job she did because it was a counting card. There is no clear winning team yet so ladies give it all you’ve got for the remaining 3 weeks.

And Finally…………..

Martin Taylor, Secretary is looking forward to receiving all your suggestions for naming the holes on the course. There have been a few suggestions already so if you have any ideas please submit them in writing to Martin as soon as possible.

18th February 2008

 Drive-In, a Foggy Memory!

Last Sunday dawned with anticipation for the new Captain Mr. Paul Fitzpatrick and Lady Captain Mrs. Noreen McKenna both hoping they would manage a great drive to mark the start of their respective captaincies. A 9-hole stableford competition was scheduled to mark the occasion, but as the day unfolded it was clear that the fog wouldn’t clear! Only the brave or foolish few headed for the 1st Tee, but what an experience it was. The teamwork was fantastic in the less than ideal playing conditions. With visibility down to a few yards at times we were all reliant on calls of “fairway clear on 2nd” and “green clear on 3rd”. It was an eerie fog bound muffled round of golf which ensured all shots were straight and yardages worked out by the book. The winner of the Captain’s Drive In 9-hole Stableford could obviously play in the dark, despite the lack of visibility Paul Clerkin managed to card 24 points. Well done Paul a great score. In 2nd spot was Gabriel Brady with 21 points.

President Mr. Paul Flynn mindful of the failing light and the thickening fog, got proceedings under way for the drive in and gathered the expectant crowd outside whilst a few posed photographs of the dignitaries were taken, the champagne cork was popped and Captain Mr. Paul Fitzpatrick was invited to make his drive, and what a screamer it was fired long and low into the dense fog. Lady Captain Mrs. Noreen McKenna took her stance and with a deep breath made her swing and hit an absolute cracker of a drive to much applause and cheers from the crowd, the Captains were officially welcomed into office by the appreciative crowd.

The lucky dippers each winning 20 euro/stg. were Gerry Trant Clones, Declan Croarkin Smithboro, Eamonn Kelly Clones, Fergal Hanna Brookeborough, and Mark & Raymond Redills. Congratulations to them, have ago you never know, ask yourself do your letters look lucky?

Texas Hold ‘Em

Ladies Spring League

The Ladies 9-hole stableford Spring League has certainly inspired the ladies to put in the best performance they can to support their teams and the scores have been incredible so far. Week one saw The Bridge Brigade surge ahead with team captain Vera Tighe carding 19 points and Marie Douglas 20 points The two best scores from The Blow Ins were from Anne McCarthy 19 and Rosita McCabe 18, in 3rd spot were Teacher’s Pets with team captain Joy Cassidy posting 15 points and Lady Captain Noreen McKenna 17 points. In last place were Law & Order with team captain Mary Trant carding 16 points and Teresa Fitzpatrick 15 points. After week 2, The Bridge Brigade are still in number one spot with the dynamic due Vera Tighe and Marie Douglas carding their team’s best scores 19 and 18 respectively. The Blow Ins are still 2nd with Eileen Kerr and Rosita McCabe top scorers with 19 and 17 points respectively. In a dramatic turnaround and a fantastic score of 21 points from Doli Maguire, Law & Order are now in 3rd spot. Elaine Hamilton also did her bit with 18 points. Teacher’s Pets are bringing up the rear despite fabulous scoring from Martha O’Grady 19 and Irene Rooney 17. So to summarise Bridge Brigade 76 points, Blow Ins 73 points, Law & Order 70 Points and Teacher’s Pets 68. All to play for and only another 4 weeks to go.

Congratulations Noreen

Wow! what a fabulous drive Lady Captain Mrs. Noreen McKenna managed to pull out of the hat to mark her “drive-in moment” witnessed by friends, club members and particularly daughter Fionnoula who drove all the way from Dublin in the fog to be there to witness Mum’s moment. The ladies club wish Noreen a very successful year and if you keep driving the ball like that, you’ll be in the prizes this year!

And Finally……………

I’ll Name that Hole in One!

When people are in the clubhouse discussing a round of golf they often confuse each other as to which holes they are talking about. Typical comments would be “the old fifth” or “the first new hole” or “the one after the two in the field”. Such references make no sense and are incomprehensible to most people particularly visitors so we are seeking suggestions as to what each hole might be called. Some suggestions have been circulated in the clubhouse but if you have any ideas please submit them to Secretary Martin Taylor.

11th February 2008

Sunday Drive In

This Sunday 17th February Captain Mr. Paul Fitzpatrick and Lady Captain Mrs. Noreen McKenna will take centre stage on the first tee at 4.30pm for their Drive In to officially mark the beginning of their captaincies. To honour Captain and Lady Captain there will be a 3 person team stableford competition over the “old 9” on Saturday and Sunday which can be played in conjunction with the respective men’s winter league and ladies spring league. We wish Paul & Noreen a very happy, successful and enjoyable 2008.

Dominic Dominates

The individual best score from week 5 of the men’s Kelly Rahill & Co. sponsored Winter League was carded by Dominic Curran with an impressive 39 points. Well done Dominic and to everyone who is supporting this competition. Remember there are two further qualifying places for the best teams from the latter 3 weeks of the competition, just to keep you focused!

Alpha-Bet Lotto

Last week’s jackpot of 2,200 euro or stg. was surely bound to go with the letters DFNG being pulled out the bag but no, it would appear that we are choosing the unusual letters following the recent unlikely jackpot winning letters which included X & Z! The 5 lucky dippers each wining 20 euro/stg. were Lorraine Coyle C/O D. Coyle, Nichola Anderson Newbliss, Mary Rafferty Connons, Mary Lennon Clones and Josephine Condon Liskaskea. Congratulations to them and with the jackpot set out 2,300 euro/stg. this week, ask yourself…….Do your letters look lucky?

Texas Hold ‘Em

There will be a rip roarin’ night on Saturday 23rd February when the rootin’ tootin’ Texas hold ‘em players hit town. Come along for a great night’s craic and try your hand at poker. The tables will be set up for 9pm so don’t be late or you’ll miss the chips!

Ladies League

There was an incredible turnout for the first week of the ladies spring league, well done ladies, the clubs were dusted off early this year! Although there are no official scores ready for publication yet, there is talk of 20 and 21 points so great scoring! It’s not too late to join the league if you aren’t on a team yet, indeed we are delighted to welcome two of our new recruits from the summer coaching sessions onto the teams and they each carded respectable scores on Sunday. Well done Lorraine Brady and Caroline Bailey. Also another of our new ladies played exceptionally well on Sunday, carding 16 points, brilliant! Each team now have 6 players and each week the best 2 scores from each team will count for the league. Ladies you can play as many times as you wish, go on, do it for the team!

Dancing Back

Ladies (and gents if you would like to come along) the Salsa dancing classes recommence on Tuesday 19th February at 7pm sharp we only have 5 weeks left to perfect those snake hip moves and nifty footwork.

Good Luck Noreen

The ladies club wish Mrs. Noreen McKenna the best of luck for Sunday for her drive-in and indeed also to Captain Paul Fitzpatrick. Ladies please show your support by being on the 1st Tee at 4.30pm on Sunday 17th February. There will be a 3 person team stableford “old 9” competition on Saturday and Sunday (which you can play alongside the League) to honour of the two Captains.

Deposit Due for Rossapenna

Those ladies going to Rossapenna on May 16th must have their deposits paid on Sunday at the Captains’ drive in please.

And Finally………….

It’s great to hear people mentioning the superb condition of the course, the splendid changes to the clubhouse and the buzz in the club welcoming our new members following the successful golf lesson sessions back in the summer. We are delighted so many ladies are joining and we hope everyone will make them feel as relaxed and welcome as possible. Remember it can be scary our there if you are new!

4th February 2008

Seamus Snatches Victory

Week 4 of the Kelly Rahill & Co. sponsored men’s Winter League again produced fine scoring in difficult conditions during the week and over the weekend, with hurricane force winds on Saturday and sleet showers on Sunday. Congratulations go to the individual winner Seamus McKiernan who was one of the last players on the course on Sunday. Seamus snatched victory from the leading 35 points scorer already in the clubhouse, with a magnificent 38 points. Well done Seamus. The team scores are showing early signs of which teams are set to qualify for the final playoffs, BUT do not be disheartened if your team is not up there with the big scores yet, there will be a further 2 teams to qualify from those teams with the best scores from the final 3 weeks of the competition. So don’t give up, give it your best shot!

Table Quiz Success

The table quiz was a great success last Saturday night with Mickey Dowds in the chair challenging the teams with a good mix of questions. Congratulations to the winning team of Liam & Gay Quigley with Hugo & Marie Clerkin. In 2nd place were Paddy & Martina McKeown with Colm & Fiona McCormack. Well done to everyone who took part and a special thank you to Mickey Dowds for giving up his time to be question master. The next social event will take place on February 23rd (and not 16th) which will be the Texas Hold ‘Em Poker night, so come along and try your luck at the tables.

Alpha-Bet

The letters for last week’s Alpha-Bet were JQKD for the 2,100 jackpot, but alas no winners. The 5 lucky dippers each winning 20 were Brendan Kelly Clones, T. Clarke C/O Ben Toals, Eamonn Dolan Lisnaskea, Hugo Maguire Cumber and Michael Campbell Clones. Well done to them! The jackpot rolls over to 2,200 so ask yourself, do your letters look lucky? Did you know that if you are the ticket seller of any of the weekly lucky dipper winners you are entered into a draw for the monthly sellers prize and a chance to win 250 so the more you sell the bigger your chances of winning that sellers prize and congratulations go to Vincent Lynch you won last month’s sellers prize.

The Elusive 2 Ronnies

We have at last managed to get The Two Ronnies to pose for photographs following victories in the 3 person team over the festivities. Ronnie Flanagan featured in the winning team and the second placed team along with Jim Monaghan and Fintan Flynn (Team 1) and Ivor Lendrum and Anthony Tate. The photographs show The Two Ronnies along with team mates and Captain Mr. Paul Fitzpatrick at a recent presentation evening.

28th January 2008

Maxwell’s Moment

The Kelly Rahill sponsored Winter League is now into it’s 4th week and is proving a real draw, as no one wants to let their team down by not playing. The course is standing up particularly well and whilst most acknowledge it is playing shorter than usual, the scoring is still quite fantastic. The individual score winning week 3 came from John Maxwell with a score, that most of us would be happy with for 18 holes let alone the 14 holes which the competition is covering. Well done John, 39 points, some shooting!

Ace Maguire

Gavin Maguire recorded his very first hole in one on Saturday whilst playing in the Winter League, at the par 3 third. Well done Gavin and may you have many more! The brandy was lovely!

Table Quiz Saturday

Clones Golf Club is holding a Table Quiz in the clubhouse at 8pm on Saturday February 2nd. The one and only quizmaster Mickey Dowds will be in the chair and everyone is welcome to come along. It should prove to be a lively and entertaining evening’s craic. Future events include Texas Hold ‘em 16th February and race night on 5th April.

Alpha Bet

The letters for last week’s Alpha Bet Draw for 2,000 were VALQ but there were no winners. The five lucky dippers each winning 20 were Fiona Hughes Corraskea, Pamela Coyle C/O D. Coyle, Bernard Casey Crossreagh Newbliss, Adrian Connolly C/O Skule Inn and Jenny Maguire C/O Doli Maguire. Well done to them. So get your envelopes in for this week’s draw and ask yourself, do your letters look lucky??

Captains’ Drive In

Mr. Paul Fitzpatrick and Mrs. Noreen McKenna will take to the fist tee for their inaugural drive-in to officially launch their captaincies for the coming season on Sunday February 17th at 4.30pm. Let’s get a nice big crowd there to wish them both well. Put it in your diaries now!

Launch of Ladies League

The Ladies usually start playing single 9-hole competitions at this time of the year but as a change; will be playing in their own Spring League. The teams have been drawn and are listed in the locker room. The 9-hole stableford competition starts on Thursday 31st January and the best 2 cards each week in each team will count towards the final score. Ladies remember you can play whenever you like (once only) and with whomever you like. Do it for the team!

Lady Captain’s Weekend Away

As you are aware, Lady Captain Mrs. Noreen McKenna’s weekend away will be in Rossapenna this year and 50 euro deposit will be collected to secure your place for the weekend away at the forthcoming drive-in on Sunday February 17th. So if you wish to go on the 3 day trip please put your name on the list in the locker room to avoid disappointment.

Save the Last Dance……..

The ladies were delighted to see a couple of men had turned up for the dance class last Tuesday evening, and looked forward to seeing these gents show some saucy salsa moves. Sadly, the gents were only in house as they had golf club administration to do and they soon made a hasty exit when the music started! Ah well maybe next week! Dancing continues for another 5 weeks from 7pm to 8pm, dance those winter blues away!

21st January 2008

 Darren Week 2 Winner

Week 2 of the Kelly Rahill & Co. sponsored men’s Winter League over 14 holes, was again well supported and thankfully the weather was good at the weekend and attracted a big crowd to the course, including many visiting greenfees on Saturday in particular. We are delighted that so many golfers are coming to enjoy the fabulous facilities at Clones Golf Club. Timesheet can be booked on 047 56017. Anyway back to the matter in hand! The winning individual score indeed came from Saturday’s play and young gun Darren McMahon carded a fantastic 36 points beating 5 others on a countback with a one over last 9 holes. Well done Darren.

Jackpot Winner!

The Alpha-bet jackpot of 6,100.00 was won last week by Colum McKenna of Drumgoast, Smithboro with the unlikely letters A,K,X,Z. The winning ticket was sold by Vincent Lynch who has been responsible for selling 3 of the last 4 jackpot winning envelopes! So if you see a silver haired gentleman passing amongst the throng at your local hostelry, be sure to stop him and buy a lotto, yes Vincent is one of Clones Golf Club’s roving ticket sellers. The five lucky dippers each winning 20 euro/stg were Dermot Kearns Annaghghane, Sheila Rice c/o Frank’s Bar Lisnaskea, Julie Montgomery c/o Frank’s Bar Lisnaskea, Mary McPhillips Scotshouse and Niall Connolly Coleman Island. Well done to them! Now ask yourself, do your letters look lucky?

Time is running out and you only have a few more days to avail of the monthly Direct Debit to pay this year’s subscription. The Direct Debit forms can be collected from the bar in the clubhouse and MUST be with the Treasurer Mr. Gerard Kelly before the end of January to avail of this method of payment. New members please contact 047 56017

Ladies Alliance

Last Monday saw the Arnmore Alliance ladies in Clones for their monthly winter gathering. The Clones ladies were great hosts supplying homebaked scones and cakes along with plenty of tea and coffee to get the ladies nicely satiated before heading onto the course. Our visitors were suitably impressed by the extensive changes to the clubhouse and in particular were extremely grateful for the wonderful warmth upon their return to the clubhouse having done battle in rather inclement mizzle which turned into heavier downpours. However the ladies spirits were high as they eagerly awaited the results and the winning score of 33 points was enough for Angela McBride of Mannan to claim first place beating Phil O’Reilly from Cavan, on a countback. 3rd place went to Mary Malone of Cavan with 32 points. The category prizes went to Rita O’Loughlin (0-19) from Mannan also with 32 points C/B. Category 20-28 went to Clones lass Elaine Hamilton with 32 points and another Clones lady Eileen Kerr claimed the 29-36 category with 28 points. Clones also won the front 9 with a magnificent 19 points carded by Vera Tighe and an equally impressive score of 18 points claimed the back 9 for Kay O’Gorman from Cavan. Well done ladies and the Arnmore Alliance are looking forward to their next outing on Monday 18th February at Headfort details in ladies locker room.

Spring League

Ladies it’s your last chance to get your names on the list for this year’s Spring League. There will be a draw for teams of 5 with a mix of handicap ranges. This 9 hole competition will run on a weekly basis with the best 2 scores from the team each week to count. You can play any day and with whomever you wish BUT remember you will be playing for the honour of your team! League starts on Thursday 31st January.

Dancing up a storm!

The first dance class last Tuesday evening was a great success with 17 eager participants arriving at the clubhouse ready to be shown all the right moves and Soni our wonderful teacher did a great job to get even the most uncoordinated of us into a rhythmic dance routine. It was great exercise and great fun. Just what you need to lift the spirits on a miserable January evening! So if you fancy joining us on Tuesday evenings from 7pm to 8pm (yes you’ll be home in time for Desperate Housewives!) there are only seven sessions left (€10 per week). AND men are welcome too!!

Joint Club AGM

The joint club AGM took place last Sunday and following in depth and informative reports from the Treasurer and Secretary the new committee was elected. Of course our President Mr. Paul Flynn has another year in office, Martin Taylor and Gerry Kelly agreed to stay on as Secretary and Treasurer respectively. Following the sad death of Trustee Jimmy Magee, earlier this year, Nat Doonan was nominated as a Trustee and voted in. The committee members nominated and accepted were Paddy McKeown, Francie Lynch, Pat Connolly, Sean Kelleher, Margaret Copus, Maureen Lynch and Anne McCarthy. We wish them a successful year ahead. As everyone could see, the refurbishment of the clubhouse is coming on very well and Francie Lynch and his team must be heartily congratulated for such a great job. The motion seeking a small increase in the annual subscription was almost unanimously accepted. This means when you are member of Clones Golf Club, you can play as much golf as you like for as little as €1.81 per day, where else would you get 4 or 5 hours entertainment for such a small outlay, and to ease the pain of paying, Clones Golf Club will be offering a monthly Direct Debit scheme. Paul McCarthy won the 13-18 category also with 34 points and a first time winner, yes folks his first ever turkey win, in category 19 and over went to Pat Fee with 33 points, well done Pat! The competition continues for the men, you still have time to get a winner and bring home the bacon…..or rather a turkey!

Wot no Score!

Gentlemen, it always pays to put your card in for a competition no matter what, as our winners this week will testify! Winner of 0-12 George Crowe with 21 points, 13-18 category winner was Shane Bonner with 30 points and the 19 and over category was won by Mike Keane with 23 points. Also gentlemen you must enter the number of strokes at the hole as well as your stableford score, unfortunately one card, with a good score had to be disqualified as only the stableford score was recorded.

Following the men’s club AGM recently, Captain Mr. Paul Fitzpatrick will be supported by his new committee who are Vice Captain Leslie McConkey, past Captain Pat Connolly, Treasurer Pat Fee, Secretary Kevin Hickey, Competition Secretary Frankie Dolan, Handicap Secretary Mickey Dowds, PRO Gerry Trant and Teams Convenor Denis Parker. Also voted onto the Committee were Padraic Smyth, Colm McMahon and George Crowe. We wish them well in their year ahead.

The winning ladies collected their beautiful prizes at the recent presentation supper. Congratulations go to Geraldine Fitzpatrick, Lorraine Brady, Caroline Bailey, Eileen Maguire, Beatrice Crudden, Gemma McMahon, Carmel McMahon, Yvonne Crudden and Veronica McGorman. The novice ladies were also presented with their prizes for their 9-hole competition and full results will appear next week. The ladies had a great night with Maggie’s Kitchen supplying the supper and Lady Captain Mrs. Eileen Kerr providing the beverages. There were the usual naughty novelties presented to anyone who hadn’t been a prize winner on the night. Ooh La La!!

Ladies AGM

At the Ladies AGM held at 3pm last Sunday, Madam Secretary Anne McCarthy gave a superb account of the previous year’s activities and events and thanked everyone who had made a contribution to the running of the ladies club in 2007. It was hard to believe that a whole year had passed since Mrs. Eileen Kerr had taken up her Captaincy. The outgoing Lady Captain then introduced her successor Mrs. Noreen McKenna and wished her every success in the coming year. Noreen introduced her Vice Captain Mrs. Teresa Fitzpatrick. The new committee were elected and Anne McCarthy agreed to stay on as Secretary. The ladies club will have their final presentation evening on Thursday next 22nd November and this will be the last official engagement before Lady Captain Mrs. Eileen Kerr and her committee hand over the reigns on Sunday to the new team. There will also be surprises and novelties for everyone. This is a night not to be missed so ladies please get your name on the list in the locker room as the suppliers of both the supper and the novelty items need to know who they are catering for!

Joy Picks up Prize at Virginia

The Arnmore Alliance took place at Virginia last week and around 54 ladies were sent to the 9 tee boxes for a shotgun start because of the frosty conditions which delayed play for some 2 hours. The organisation of the start was seamless and everyone enjoyed a great days golf. The winning score was 43 points and our own Joy Cassidy wasn’t far away with 38 points which was enough to win the low handicap section. Joy chipped and putted like a dream and was delighted with her win. Well done Joy!

Captains’ Night Success

Clones Golf Club’s Captains’ night last Saturday was a huge success with over 200 people attending the function in the clubhouse. It’s sometime since the Captains’ night was held on home soil and it proved to be very popular with the members and visitors alike. The sumptuous supper catered by Maggie’s kitchen was smoothly served in both the marquee and the clubhouse itself and everyone agreed the staff, particularly the waiting staff did a great job of getting everyone fed and watered. After the speeches, toasts welcoming visiting guests and Captains and presentations of matchplay cups and prizes, the gathered crowd enjoyed the rest on the evening dancing, chatting and having a good time. Particular congratulations go to proud grandmother Jo Clarke (she wouldn’t reveal her age!) who has been a member for over 42 years and was so delighted to collect a prize on such an important night in the golfing calendar. She spoke on behalf of herself and son Paddy who was away for his stag party. Yes the rumours are true, Paddy Clarke is indeed taking the plunge into married life! Captain Mr. Pat Connolly and Lady Captain Mrs. Eileen Kerr would like to thank everyone for all their hard work in making the night such a huge success. Obviously there are too many people to single out but praise has to be given to Francie Lynch and his team who must have worked well into the night on Friday to complete the transformation of the ladies locker, it is fabulous well done lads!

Alpha-Bet

This week’s letters in the Alpha Bet lotto were FPGR and there were no winners of the 5,200 euro/stg jackpot so the jackpot increases to 5,300 next week. The lucky dippers were John Quigley Newbliss, Jack McBride Smithboro, Adrian Treanor Clones, P. Maguire Clones and Anne Wrafter Corcummins. Well done to them. Have a go and see if your letters look lucky? Draw Monday evenings in Clones Golf Club.

Enda Gets Hitched

One of our members is getting married on Saturday 17th November, Enda Connolly will take the hand of Lisa Lynch, Francie & Carmel Lynch’s daughter in marriage and we wish them every success in their future lives together.

Ladies Results

The last matchplay trophy was decided last week between Ann Keating and Vera Tighe. Congratulations go to Vera who clinched the victory on the 20th hole. Vera rather sportingly admitted that Ann had been the better player on the day and that she should have won on the 18th however nerves must have got the better of Ann as she missed a simple putt to send them both onto the 19th . Commiserations Ann and congratulations Vera who has had a great year with a number of notable victories including the mixed matchplay title along with Micky Connolly and mother of the year award bestowed by her son Kevin!

Ladies Presentation Night

The ladies will get together on Thursday 22nd of November to celebrate the end of their golfing year with all the final presentations (apart from the Turkeys) including the weekly competitions for the last few weeks. So if you are a winner please ensure you attend, ah go on, come anyway Lady Captain would like to go out with a bang as this will be her last official engagement before standing down at the AGM on Sunday 25th November at 3pm. The novice ladies prizes will also be presented and it promises to be a great night with a few surprises in store I’m sure!

AGM Sunday 23rd November

Ladies it is vital that we all make every effort to attend the AGM to ensure that our views and comments are included in any decisions that are made. Besides it’s an excuse to all get together again and have a good time! Please make sure any motions or items for the meeting are brought to the attention of Anne McCarthy (Madame Secretary) as soon as possible.

And finally…………

Happy Birthday to Betty Tighe who was 81 years young on Monday and to Maureen Lynch also was also celebrating on Monday!

Having 3 putted the first, Paddy knew he was up against a strong challenge from Gene, but he got his act together and it was nip and tuck for the next 15 holes. Coming to the 17th Paddy was 1 up when Gene unfortunately drove his ball into the drain on the right. Paddy seeing an opportunity proceeded to then pull the ball left into the rough! This hardened matchplay player kept his cool and cannily chipped out from the rough rather than going for the green, playing for a 5 to Gene’s 6 to secure victory 2 & 1. Commiserations to Gene and well done to Paddy. The winners of the other matchplay trophies were Scratch Cup-Mickey Cadden beat Shane Morgan, Hilton Cup Pat Ryan beat Dean Beggan and the fourball Matchplays winners were Mac Sammon & Francie Boylan who beat Shane Morgan and Paul McDermott. Congratulations to all.

Turkey Time!

Yes ladies it’s that time of year again when our thoughts turn to tinsel and turkey. Now the former can be purchased in any good retail outlet, the latter taste so much better when you’ve fought for it; strategized your way round the course; plotted your position for the next shot and conquered the greens to bring in a score and win your prize bird. So ladies from 1st November inclusive (yes you can play in the last sweep and have your sights set on a turkey next Thursday 1st November) until 9th December inclusive there will be a 9 hole “old course” stableford repeater to give everyone a chance of procuring that all important festive fowl. Three prizes will be awarded in each category BUT to be fair, only one prize per player. As this is a repeater you can play as often as you wish. Ladies, happy hunting!

And Finally………….

A couple of dates for your diaries, Captains’ dance Saturday November 10th in the clubhouse and presentation of prizes night Thursday 22nd November 2007. Details later in the month.

Ladies Outing to Slieve

The annual ladies committee outing, this year organised by Brid Finlay, took the hard working ladies on the committee that have done all those important jobs throughout the year, to the Slieve Russell. The ladies were picked up by bus and ferried to their destination each clutching their “special outfit” for after the golf. Upon arrival the ladies had tea and biscuits and the draw was done for playing partners. As the ladies made their way to the first tee, the clouds parted and the sun shone through, it was going to be a good day. First off were Lady Captain Mrs. Eileen Kerr, Teresa Fitzpatrick and Irene Rooney. They all had good tee shots off the 1st under the immense pressure of the gazes of the remaining ladies. Next up were Mary Trant, Martha O’Grady and the buggy babes Joy Cassidy and Brid Finlay. Now Brid must be commended for her bravery and dedication as she has only just had knee surgery but despite this she carded a score and was in the prizes!

The last group to depart were the giggling Gerties! They laughed the whole way round the course and obviously had a whale of a time! They were Doli Maguire, Ann McCarthy, Irene McConkey and on the other side of the course Lady Vice Captain, Noreen McKenna! Now despite all this merriment and lack of concentration in this four-ball the winner on the day with 5 no scores on her card was in this group and was Ann McCarthy (23) with 32 points. The handicap secretary will be keeping a close eye on this lady! In second place, just pipped at the post was Joy Cassidy (18) with 31 points. Joy played lovely steady golf, starting with a fine par on the first and managed 19 points on the front 9. In third spot, despite carrying the injury, was Brid Finlay (19) with 28 points well done.

After the golf the ladies donned their finery and with a little titivation the ladies took their places for a sumptuous dinner and some fine wine. The evening rolled along with golfing anecdotes, a few of Ann’s special jokes and a fine rendition of Cinderella by Martha on the bus on the way home. A great day was had by all and a big thank you to Brid for organising the day.

Vera Does it Again!

The last 18 hole competition of the season was won by a very much on form, Vera Tighe (18) with 31 points claiming the Section A honours. Section B was also hard fought for and the winner with 30 points was Teresa Fitzpatrick (30). Well done ladies. Now for the month of October the ladies will be playing 9-hole stroke over the “old Course” each weekly competition will run on Sunday and Thursday as usual.

The last Golfer of the Year competition for the ladies has been held and for the third time, Mary Trant has accumulated the points required to win this competition. Mary started playing golf as a novice in August 2000 in a scheme very much like the one recently run by Brid Finlay to encourage new ladies to join Clones Golf Club. She started off with an embarrassingly high handicap of 45 which thankfully soon started to tumble. Mary now plays off 15 having lost 2 shots this year. Well done and congratulations.

Alpha-Bet Lotto

The letters drawn last Monday for the Alpha-Bet Lotto were A M O & W but alas no one chose these as their letters so again the jackpot rolls over to 4,300 Stg/Euro. The lucky dippers each winning 20 stg/euro were J. Kelly Cara Street Clones, Eamon Campion C/O AIBP, Colin Curran Lisnaskea, BT Hickey Clonmore Clones and Mary Mulholland Lisnaskea. Well done to them! Have a go this week and ask yourself, do your letters look lucky?

Learner Ladies Fully Fledged

The last learner ladies Tuesday took place this week and with a fantastic turn out the final 5 hole stroke competition was going to be hard fought for. Once again the weather was superb, as it has been every Tuesday evening, bar one. The ladies did their very best to win a prize to join the prize winners from the previous week. The prizes looked so good displayed on the table. I’m delighted to report that some of our real raw beginners were in the winners’ enclosure; these ladies have made remarkable progress and have obviously been bitten by the bug! Well done to everyone who took part. The winner of week 21st August was Geraldine Fitzpatrick, well done! Now this lady has been seen out practising most evenings and obviously it’s paying off! In 2nd place was Eileen Maguire and in 3rd spot, also a lady who is extremely keen, Caroline Bailey, nice hat! All these ladies were presented with their prizes and made beautiful acceptance speeches, great stuff! The winner of week 28th August was another raw beginner who has really made the grade and given her all to improve her game, well done to Christine Skeath, in second place is a lady who should win a prize just for sheer determination and enthusiasm! But as we don’t give prizes for those wonderful attributes she had to put in a great performance to claim second place, well done to Gemma McMahon. The new clubs are obviously working very nicely! In 3rd spot was Carmel McMahon. These ladies also made lovely speeches and all of the Learner Ladies clubbed together and got Lady Captain Mrs. Eileen Kerr to present a beautiful bouquet of flowers to Brid Finlay, the brainchild behind the scheme. Brid was gracious in her thanks and pointed out that without the dedication and assistance of her team, the cooperation of Clones Golf Club and the enthusiasm and determination of our new ladies, it wouldn’t have been possible. Everyone was then treated to a wonderful supper from Maggie’s kitchen and the excited chatter went on well into the evening.

Learner Ladies Competition

To keep our learner ladies interested there is a 9-hole competition to be run until the end of October. So come on ladies keep at it and by the new season you will be competing with the seasoned players!

Marie Wins Hamper

The Hamper was played for last Thursday, yes the Christmas hamper! But it is only 15 weeks away you know! Anyway the winner with a great score of nett 72 was Marie Douglas (18) despite an 8 on her card very early on in her round Marie kept her head together and plugged away and was delighted to have a win after a bit of a dry spell. Well done Marie, back on form. In 2nd place also with a good score was Irene McConkey with nett 74. Irene has been playing very steadily towards the latter end of the season and is sure to have a few downward adjustments to her handicap in the new season.

Matchplay Cups

The Junior and Rosebowl Matchplay trophies are to be contested over the coming weeks with the draw having been made last week. So good luck to all the competitors

Pringle Cup for Men

The men compete for the Pringle Cup on Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th of September. Timesheet in operation.

The lucky dippers each winning 20 euro/stg were McCabes Jubilee Rd. Clones, Brendan Crowe C/O George Crowe, Pat Treacy Lisnaskea, Joanne McCaul Redhills and D. Carolan Aghabog. Well done to our lucky dippers and if you would like to have a go in the alpha bet lotto just pick up an envelope where you see the Alpha Bet posters. Do your letters look lucky?

Clones was represented in Spa, Ballynahinch by Gerry & Marie Douglas, Stephen Trant and Vera Tighe, Elaine & George Hamilton, Lady Captain Mrs. Eileen Kerr and Jim Kerr and Gerry & Mary Trant for the Jack Craig Memorial Mixed Foursomes competition on Sunday last. The team had a great day and still had enough energy, thankfully, to push start the bus as the lights had been left on! Once again thank you to everyone who took part and made it such a great day.

The ladies competed in a stroke medal, GOY last Thursday and Mary Trant (16) found her form and carded 69 nett winning Section A (0-23) well done Mary now playing off 15. Winner of Section B (24-36) was Doli Maguire with 79 nett congratulations to the winners.

Well done! We hope to see you throughout the Autumn and into next season. Well done to Brid Finlay and her team who dedicated themselves each Tuesday to coaching, encouraging and nurturing these new golfers in the hope that they too will be bitten by the bug!

Elaine Hamilton Wins O2 Trophy

Congratulations to Elaine Hamilton for a fine score of 35 points last Thursday which was enough to win Section B (24-36) and the O2 Trophy which is only in it’s second year. Elaine looses a shot and now plays of 24 well done! In 2nd place (and winner of section A -23) with 31 points was Mary Trant. Congratulations ladies and well done to everyone who played.

Learner Ladies- No Putt Down!

Our learner ladies are so keen that, despite the torrential rain last Tuesday they still turned out in large numbers for their weekly coaching lesson. Brid Finlay (organiser) and her team took pity on them and decided not to send them into the storm but to hold a putting competition in the clubhouse. The ladies were split into teams each allocated to an experienced player and the fight was on! The ladies took it very seriously and the determination really shone through. The screams and howls at the near misses nearly lifted the roof and the cheers when a putt was made was deafening, great fun! The winning team were Mary Trant, Catherine Fleming and Geraldine Fitzpatrick congratulations to these ladies who each won a nice bottle of wine for their efforts. Catherine Fleming was particularly thrilled as it was her first night with the Learner Ladies! It’s fair to say she’s hooked on this golf thing already! The runners up and beaten by only a couple of putts were Brid Finlay, Martina Maguire and Ann McGarry. Next Tuesday 28th August 2007 is sadly the last of our training sessions so ladies please come along for the end of season party! Happily a lot of our new ladies have joined as members and will continue their golfing prowess throughout the coming weeks.

Clones Golf Club
Charlie & Nuala Win Cup

There was a great buzz around the clubhouse last Friday evening as the mixed foursomes cup competitors completed their rounds and joined the growing throng to share their woes and triumphs of their round of golf. The weather gave us a brief fantastic haven amidst the rain of the previous days and the course was set up to test the players on some holes and fool them into complacency on others. Everyone enjoyed the day and the winners of this year’s Mixed Foursomes Cup were Charlie and Nuala Browne with 71 ½ nett. Congratulations and well done. In second spot were Gerry & Mary Trant with 74 nett despite the 9 carded at the lakes hole (6th). Well done to everyone who took part, a great day was had by all. Presentation will take place on Monday 16th July after the Lotto.

Howell Cup

The men playing in the Howell cup managed a tight enough home victory against Mannan Castle of 8 ½ to 7 ½ and knew that they had their work cut out on the return leg. Mannan Castle managed to mirror the score and the state of play was all square. Joe Smith and Gene McEnroe, who were the first out for Clones were called to a play off down the 19th and they rose to the challenge magnificently. Joe’s superb drive set Gene up for his approach and the Clones boys managed to par the hole. Mannan Castle put up a brave struggle but only managed a bogey and Clones are through to the next round. Well Done Clones and commiserations Mannan Castle.

Ulster 4-Ball

Our valiant Ulster fourball team made it through to the last 16 teams in Ulster only to be knocked out on the away leg by Nuremore despite taking a couple of the matches down the 18th. Lady Members Cup

The Barry, Hickey & Henderson sponsored Lady Members Cup was contested last Thursday and playing partners were selected by way of a draw for this prestigious competition. It was like Lady Captain’s Day all over again, nerves jittering as the ladies were out of their comfort zone, not playing with their usual playing partners. And once again there were mutters of “if only I hadn’t had that 8” or “I just tried too hard, couldn’t relax!” Anyway the winner played steady golf and was able to relax for part of the round, bringing in the same score which won Lady Captain’s Day; The winner of the Lady Members Cup was Elaine Hamilton 74 nett and in 2 spot with 76 nett was Doli Maguire (If only you hadn’t had an 8 on the 5th!) congratulations to them and also to Rosita McCabe who claimed the gross prize with 92. The Rossmore Cup Team had a busy weekend playing the away leg of the round on Saturday in Lisburn. They played magnificently in lovely sunshine and managed one and a half matches away, a great start. The return leg was the very next day in very different conditions in Clones. A beautiful warm sunny start to the matches saw Clones only needing two and a half matches to win and the lads made a great start winning 2 of the required matches. The heavens opened half way through the rounds and everyone was literally drowned but the course stood up to the downpour and the players bravely carried on. The dedication of Gemma McMahon and Mary Reilly can’t go unmentioned. They patiently stood on the 1st tee on Sunday in the downpour, waiting for the rain to clear, got soaked, went home, got changed, came back and played their few holes as planned. Well done ladies keep at it!

And Finally…….

There are still a number of draw tickets not handed in or sold and to ensure the Mega Draw works all tickets must be sold. Please ensure that all tickets are handed in as soon as possible. The winner will collect €10,000.00 so come on if you haven’t got your ticket yet contact the golf club 047 56017 to arrange purchase.

Catherine Back on Form

The ladies competed for the Ulster Sports Trust last Thursday with the prize very much sought after as the winner travels to Massereene Golf Club on the 21st August with Lady Captain Mrs. Eileen Kerr to play in the National Final. For those of us who have been lucky enough to have experienced the hospitality of The Ulster Sports Trust it is a prize worth going for. Catherine Farrell (16) has been off her game for the last few weeks carding in the 80’s and it was with much delight and relief that she managed to find her form on Thursday and win this prestigious day away with Lady Captain with 33 points. Congratulations Catherine and well done to everyone who took part.

Captain’s Prize to the Ladies

Captain Mr. Pat Connolly would like all the ladies to be able to play for his prize so for this year ladies, you will be able to play from Thursday 19th July until Thursday 26th July inclusive (play once only). There has been a draw for playing partners as usual and this will be a stroke GOY competition but not a medal. Ladies you will need to liaise with your drawn playing partners and decide which day to play for this prestigious prize. Good luck and may you pick a great day for your challenge!

Mary Trant Wins in Enniskillen

Three of our ladies travelled to Enniskillen on Saturday to play in the Ladies Open sponsored by Kitchen Wizard. Mary Trant, Marie Douglas and Irene Rooney set off with trepidation as the rain poured from the skies. The ladies even had a contingency plan to go shopping if it didn’t ease off by the time they arrived at Enniskillen Golf Club. As usual the welcome was very warm from the club with Lady Vice-Captain Mrs Marina Brownlee greeting over 65 players from clubs from far and wide and offering them home baked scones and tea before they set off to play. Thankfully the skies cleared and it was t-shirt order for the round as the weather really played its part in making it such an enjoyable round of golf. Mary Trant (17) played the front 9 well and carded 21 points hot on her heals was both Marie Douglas (19) and Irene Rooney (16) with decent scores themselves. Mary then played her next 4 holes very badly and was only scoring single points on each hole but managed to pick up her game and returned 37 points. The generous sponsors of Enniskillen Golf Club Ladies Open were Bryan & Linzi Davidson of Kitchen Wizard. Mary Trant was delighted to accept first prize from Brian a beautiful flat screen television set. This was Brian & Linzi’s first sponsorship and they generously pledged to sponsor again next year. So ladies if you are fed up with your Kitchen Brian and Linzi will come and wave their magic wand with Kitchen Wizard and they will give you a complete Kitchen facelift including granitelite work tops. Magic!

Marie Douglas was delighted to accept her prize; Marie was pipped for 2nd spot on a count back and won her section with 36 points. Irene who had been patiently waiting to drive home the prizewinners was stunned when her name was also called to collect a prize for winning the low handicap section with 32 points. Mary & Irene also collected prizes for 2’s. A great day was had by all and once again the Clones ladies would like to thank Enniskillen for making them feel so welcome and they would particularly like to thank Brian and Linzi for their generous sponsorship.
